Hunters picks up nicely the second year of Preacher comics, with a new editor, and less bloodshed. Well, maybe that's just this storyline. Anyhow, they got rid of the blood, but they added more swearing, and nudity, so I'm not sure how much of a toss up it is. Still, I'm personally a bit more comfortable with this than all that gore. This story introduces us to The Grail, well maybe introduce is too strong a word. It gives us hints about a secret organization that has been keeping close tabs on Jesse Custer for a very long time. And since his incident in Annville, is out to track him down for their own mysterious purposes. Incidentially the last time we heard about these guys was in a reference from a very scared Deblanc. Read into that what you will...
Jesse and Tulip, finally finding a moments piece and quiet, head into San Fransisco and meet up once again with their buddy Cassidy. But upon learning that Cassidy's ex-girlfriend has ODed on some bad heroin from a snobbish ultra weird sex-fiend drug lord they start trying to hunt down the culprit. Leading them into the strange world of rich fetish freaks.
Meanwhile, we are introduced to two Grail agents, Featherstone, and Hoover. Both of whom are actually double agents trying to destroy the organization from the inside. Although the purposes of it aren't actually made clear, yet... Anyhow, they are joined on the hunt for Custer by a scary German guy named Starr. He is very mean, and ready to kill for his beliefs. I don't want to give too many plot details away because it gets pretty interesting; and it's pretty hard to explain anyhow. But on the whole things are getting very dicy for our heros. And by the end of this story arc a whole host of new problem are looming on their horizons. One of which is The Saint of Killers who seems to be a step behind the action for the moment. But, of course who knows how long that will last.
