Truman (Truman, Benjamin, George, John, Johannes), son of Truman and Orra (Perry) Oatman, was born in October 1814 at Adams Center, Jefferson County, New York. He married Fannie Ellis, who was born ca 1820 in New York.

The 1870 census of LeRoy, Jefferson County, New York, lists Truman, age 54, as a farmer with $8,000 in real estate and $2,500 personal property. Fanny was 48 years of age. In the same household is Betsey Strickland, age 27, and her son Seth "2nd", age 4; and Sophie Ferguson, age 25, with her daughter Fanny, age 1. Marriage records have not been located at this point to determine who Betsy and Sophia married, or why they were both living at their parents' home with their children.

Truman was living in Philadelphia, Jefferson County, New York, in 1900, age 85, near his son Albert.
