Lyman Oatman (254)

Lyman (David, Samuel, George, John, Johannes), son of David and Betsy (Clough) Oatman, was born 21 October 1816, Hartford, Washington County, New York, and died 9 September ____ in Angola, Erie County, New York.

He married Desire Barrell, daughter of Colburn and Lois (Mattison) Barrell; she was born 10 September 1816 in Gouverneur, New York, and died 8 March 1888, in Angola.

Lyman was a member of the State legislature from Erie County, New York, in 1870, and was listed as a "prominent citizen" of Evans, New York. "The place was at first called Evans Station, and a village was laid out under that name, but in 1854 or '55 a postoffice was established there by the name of Angola... Since then the village has borne that appellation." (History of the City of Buffalo and Erie County, Vol. I, p. 580)

In 1863, and again in 1865, Lyman was a supervisor of the town of Evans. A general store, built on the site of the Farmer's Hotel in Evans, was purchased by Lyman Oatman, whose son, David, succeeded him in the business.

The Michigan DAR Bible and Pioneer Records list him as the "Hon." Lyman Oatman; he may have been a Justice of the Peace.
