Introduction

The world is heating up and so are the environmental politics worldwide. New government regulations and the newly signed Kyoto Protocol have put environmental issues on the top of the agenda for most Canadian public and private sector organizations - small, medium and large.

Northwestern Polytechnic University (NPU) is a large post-secondary institution with approximately 50,000 full- and part-time students, and over 2000 employees. NPU has eight schools: Business, Health Sciences, Transportation, Manufacturing and Industrial Mechanical, Construction, and Computing and Academic Studies. This organization has an enormous environmental impact not only on its 80 acres of land, but also on the surrounding community.

The Board of Governors of NPU wants to be seen as a socially responsible corporate citizen and has decided to "go green" in order to comply with the new government regulations and the Kyoto Protocol.  The Board has formed a task force to develop recommendations for implementing an environmental policy.

You have been asked to participate in the task force with other professionals from all over campus. Your job is an important one because going green has significant financial and operational impacts to the organization.
