Overview:

Well, the second year of publication and pretty much the entire creative team turns over the reigns to others. Quitely, now famous for his new take on The X-Men, and Mark Miller head the creative team, all excellent artists in their on right. But like all art, when someone else takes on the role of guiding someone else’s ideas it takes a while for things to settle down. There are some noticeable inconsistencies throughout this story arc. Both the writing and the Artwork are very different, of course thee is nothing wrong with this, it is only natural, but the story suffers.

In this story we learn that maybe Jenny Sparks isn’t quite as dead as we thought. Both The Authority and another group of superhumans are out to get the mysterious baby that may or may not be the reincarnation of Jenny, now as Jenny Quantum, "the spirit of the 21st century". Things get very very bloody as The Authority face off against a tyrannical former US intelligence advisor, Dr. Krigstein. The good doctor has an army of disgruntled super solders waiting for some payback, and he means to give it to them as he seiges Manhatten, Paris, Berlin, Bejing, and Washington.

The Baddie:

Dr. Krigstein

This guy is very weird. He strikes me as the same kind of man who becomes a disgruntled postal worker returning to the office one day and firing blindly into his coworkers. It doesn’t help matters that he looks like he’s been beaten with an ugly stick. Krigstein isn’t crazy though, he’s methodical, maniacal, and calculating. He knows the score and is prepared to do his damnedest to stop what he considers the maniacs of The Authority. A great villain, because he makes a lot of sense. Kudos go out to Miller for this one.

The Good Stuff:

The Not So Good:

The Best Scene:

When Hawksmoor makes his annoucement to the world that The Authority are here to stay, and wont put up with the same old shit that others ignore. Why be a superhero if you can’t actually help the people who need it? A great sentiment, and one overlooked far to often by comics.

Overall:

An interesting story. Jack Hawksmoor makes a good new leader for the team. The bad guy was pretty cool and there was a large element of humor in the art. I’d bet Quitely had a blast designing all those heros and then killing them. I was a bit disturbed that the gore has been turned up to such a level. There’s a point where it gets to be too much. Anyhow, a very good effort from a new team; I look forward to more.
