Book: The Authority: Devil's Night
Story: The Breaks

Issue: Annual 2000

Overview:

After that very entertaining ending to the last storyline we are treated to a new creative team doing their best at creating a stand alone Annual issue. But the story here is more than a bit weird. 'The Authority' storylines aren't usually confined to 32 pages. And the format proves quite constrictive for storytelling. Not very much is accomplished or even explained here. The story such as it is has the team facing off against a whole bunch of unexplained dead guys. Both Midnighter and Apollo definately have some history here that isn't revealed. There is also a 'Stormwatch' element in this story that was never explained. Basically, the plot goes that a bunch of zombies show up with a flying Cold War Russian Battleship, 'The Authority' kick some butt and then have to deal with the recently resurected American response to said threat. This response comes in the form of a rather depressing super human named Adam Bomb. Fun and mayhem ensue...

The Baddie:

Lamplight / A heap of dead folk

Well, I supose the only really definable Baddie here would be this guy refered to by Midnighter as Lamplight. He is a sort of spectral skeleton that fires laser beams. Whatever... There's also a bunch of other zombie folk running around but they seem to be more there for the purposes of meaningless destruction.

The Good Stuff:

The Not So Good:

The Best Scene:

None.

Overall:

Not really a bad story overall, I just wanted to understand what was going on better. I have a feeling there's way more to this... I supose I'll never know though, ah well. Good atrwork. It's different but appropriate. I just wish we could find out why these things are happening, even if they aren't resolved. It's be nice if they started something in an Annual that led to the regular series. It seems like all Annuals ever want to do is provide dramatic conclusions to storylines, or have totally self contained stories, like here. It's a bit of a shame. 'Cause this has potential, but in the end, it's wasted.
