Overview: (Part 1)

There is truly some serious weirdness going on here. The first issue of this story sees The Carrier infiltrated by a crazed killing andriod, who absolutely decimates 'The Authority', hillbilly style. Yup, it's Seth the deranged redneck android ready to tear our crew new orafices. Seems he was sent by the men upstairs (by that I mean the rich and powerful of the world) who suddenlt feel that their power bases might be upset by the likes of 'The Authority'. So what do the worlds largest corporations and the US government decide to do? Well, of course, they decide the time has come to kill 'The Authority' and replace them with their own puppet super hero team. Sound crazy. It is. And after the first issue of this story arc, we are treated suddenly to a brand new storyline. So the following review is split into two parts the first is for issue #22, the second for issue #27-29.

The Baddie:

Seth

Now Seth here is a bad guy you can sink your teeth into. He's part machine, part hillbilly, all psychotic. He sneaks onto The Carrier, and proceeds to just about kill everyone. It's very very mean, and you've gotta give him props for being so well prepared. Big and ugly, Seth is definately, a classic thug of a baddie.

The Good Stuff:

The Not So Good:

The Best Scene:

Midnighter taking Jenny Quantum to safety, then comming back and destroying Seth and aparently himself by blowing up The Carrier. Very dramatic.

It follows 'The Authority' issues 23-26 and takes place before Brave New World Part 2. If your desperate to know the finale scroll down to read what fate has befallen 'The Authority'.

Part 1

Overview: (Part 2)

Well, Part 2 picks up nicely after issue 26. 'The New Authority' are still in power and we start by learning that in fact our beloved original Authority might not be quite as dead as we'd previously thought. They have been humiliated, dcimated, and made to suffer by the men who had them removed. Hawskmoor is a bum on the street begging for beer money after having his IQ halved. The Engineer is living with an abusive husband and six terrible kids after her nanoblood was siphoned out and a new memory was implanted in her. Swift is the perfect 50s style housewife for a TV mogul. The Shaman has been trapped in a small vodoo doll by The Surgeon, and Apollo is tied up and beaten daily by Last Call and Teuton. A very depressing time for our heros. The question remains though: whatever happened to Midnighter and baby Jenny Quantum? Well, guess what kids; they're back, and ready to kick some serious upsurping tail. Meanwhile the same old shenanigans continue aboard The Carrier, and who else is back? Why it's everyone's favorite hillbilly Seth. Yes, the goodtimes are back; and they start with Midnighter cleaning house.

The Baddie:

The New Authority / Seth

Well, The New Authority dont really end up ammounting to all that much when pitted against Midnighter and Apollo. But then again that really isn't their fault. They're far too wrapped up in their own petty squables. Seth on the other hand actually manages to pose a bit of a threat here. He's mean and pissed. He's got over 1000 different super powers and is the US governments 6 million dollar super weapon. It's a great match up, when Seth faces off for one final battle against Apollo.

The Good Stuff:

The Not So Good:

The Best Scene:

Midnighter and Jenny Quantum sneaking onto The Carrier, and avoiding detection in some very Matrix-esque ways.

Overall:

A good story. Solid all around, but it really doesn't feel like a conclusion. There's still more to these characters that hasn't been told. But then again, when a creative team moves on, maybe it's time to call it quits. I know other people will pick up this story sooner or later and keep it going. Midnighter, who often appears somewhat dimunitive really shines here. He is in my opinion the coolest character in 'The Authority'. He's got serious attitude and he backs it up with some incredible heroics. A god job all around, the artwork and dialogue are excellent. I'm very impressed with the effort given here, especially after losing Quitely to Marvel. It's a very stand up book on a whole. There were some moments that things fell flat but considering the creative turmoil involved throughout the series' existence it does an admirable job at creating belivable characters in a far flung situation. I really enjoyed myself reading this. It was well worth the time and dedication.
