Cyril moved to Lake Geneva in 1838. In 1850 he was living in a household with Charles Shaw (a tavern keeper) and his wife, James David (a tavern keeper) and his family, Hiram M. Little (a wagonmaker), and George T. Snow (a shoemaker). Cyril was listed as a merchant.
Cyril's sister Calista and her family also lived in Lake Geneva in 1850. Her husband, Russell Mallory, died there in March of 1852. After his death, Cyril took in his sister and her three girls and provided a home for them.
Cyril's Will was dated 10 July 1888; he died in 1889, but the estate was not settled until 22 July 1902, with his niece, Hattie J. Williams, as petitioner and executrix. His survivors included: Mrs. Emily K. Dodge, Denver, Colorado (#1502); Lucy A. Crozer, Cedar Rapids, Iowa (#1504); Mary E. Hutchinson, New York City (#1510); Mrs. F. Vail (#1507); Emma Vandercook, Evanston, Illinois (#1506); Emma E. Bucklin, Dundee, Illinois (#461); Gardner S. Oatman, DeWitt, Iowa (#1501); Lulu Oatman, Denver, Colorado (unknown); John Deane, Poultney, Vermont (#465); Mary A. Bannister, Poultney, Vermont (#466); Mary Goodsell, Moorhead, Minnesota (#461); and three children of H. P. Oatman (#1511), deceased, one named Willie (William Fletcher, #3630), Orange, New Jersey.
Cyril was the author of a letter found in the History of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, Vol. I, p. 746-7, which states in part:
"My grandfather, George Oatman, had three brothers, Benjamin, Isaac and Joseph (emphasis added) . . . My grandfather and his brother Isaac came to Vermont. George...settled in Rutland County, and Isaac in Bennington County, and Benjamin settled in Jefferson county, N.Y. Joseph, the other brother, was called the lost Oatman; went from home south and was supposed to be dead. . ."
Joseph's relationship to this family has not been proven, and his name continues to be linked to us, in large part because of this letter.
