Orlin was very well educated and taught English literature in an eastern college. He was also a lecturer. The family moved to Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan; in 1839, he purchased property in "Village of Lake Geneva" (Deeds, Vol. I), Walworth County, Wisconsin. He is listed as the head of a household in Oakland County, Michigan, in 1845 consisting of three males and six females, which indicates that he had several more children than the two listed below.
While on a lecture tour in the west, he contracted cholera and died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1859. He is buried in the Old Cemetery in Middletown (Montpelier), Vermont. His widow lived in Evanston, Illinois, after Orlin's death.
NOTE; In the Vital Records Room in Montpelier, Vermont, an Orlin Oatman, described as the son of Eli and Mary Oatman, is recorded as having died in 1841; his birth date is given as 1805.
