Darius Oatman (373)

Darius Oatman (373) Genealogy Darius (Darius, Benjamin, George, John, Johannes), son of Darius and Jerushia Oatman, was born at Adams Center, Jefferson County, New York, 21 February 1821. He removed with his father, in 1833, to South Norwich Township, Oxford County, Ontario, where he was married on 25 September 1841 to Sarah H. "Sally" McCollow, who died 12 May 1892, age 67 yr, 7 mo, 13 dy.

Darius was a farmer and a great hunter. According to census records, they were Methodist. He died 27 April 1910 aged 90 yr, 2 mo, 6 dy; and is buried with Sarah in New Road Cemetery, Tillsonburg, Ontario, adjacent to his farm.

The exact number of his children is unknown, but the following have been compiled according to the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census records of Oxford County, Ontario, and Darius' obituary of 28 April 1910 in the Tillsonburg Liberal, which stated he was survived by sons, Norman and Truman, "of Holton, Mich.", Frank and Nelson "of St. Thomas", and Angus "at home", and one daughter, Mrs. P. F. Johnston of Otterville.

1364 Amelia/Cynthia Aurelia, b. 1854, Oxford Co., ON; d. 1935; m. Peter F. Johnson (Johnston, per Darius' obituary), 1847-1924. Both bur. New Road Cem., Tillsonburg, OH. Children, surname Johnson:

A Ernest Almont, b. 30 Oct 1872, South Norwich, ON Plus two more sons and three daughters. In the records of New Road Cemetery with Amelia and Peter are the following; Winsor and Nettie are probably children of Amelia and Peter:
