He married Emmeline Hicks on 13 June 1840 in Norwich, Oxford County, Ontario, daughter of Martin Hicks, Sr., and Nancy Perkins, who was born 4 December 1819 in New York, and died 9 December 1909 in Memphis, Michigan. The family was living in South Norwich Township, Oxford County, Ontario, in 1851, and were farmers. Roswell was noted to be a Quaker, and Emmeline a Baptist.

1358 Idora "Dora", b. 11 Jun 1859, MI; d. 15 Dec 1897. Reports from three sources give three different places of death: Festoria, Watertown, and Millington, MI. She m. Noah Bowerman, 21 Oct 1878, in Fremont, Newaygo Co., MI. Noah and Dora were residents of Watertown, MI, at the time they wed, where Noah was a farmer. Noah was born 30 Jan 1850, ON, and died 29 Sep 1934 in Gladwin, MI, the son of Thomas and Jane Margaret (Mott) Bowerman. Although originally listed as "Dora", she was listed as "Idora" in the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Michigan. Children, surname Bowerman:
