A son was born to A. L. Oatman on 25 Oct 1912 in Tillsonburg. This is believed to be the same A. L. Oatman who ran an undertaking business in Tillsonburg, but later moved to London, where he expanded his business into furniture and home furnishings. A news article from 29 July 1920 in the Tillsonburg News states:

"A. L. Oatman, funeral director, of London, formerly of Tillsonburg, and his assistant, narrowly escaped serious injury and possibly death about 9:30 o'clock Monday night, when their motor hearse in which they were riding was struck by a string of shunted freight cars at the Grand Trunk crossing at Waterloo Street.

"The two were going south on Waterloo street to make call at Victoria Hospital when the accident occurred. They state that the gates were up and no warning as to the approaching cars was given. When they had just reached the tracks the string of cars came in view from behind other cars, and before anything could be done the cars were upon them. Mr. Oatman called to Mr. Crandall, who was driving the car, to jump, but not before the cars had struck the hearse. Mr. Oatman managed to jump to safety, but Mr. Crandall was still at the wheel when the hearse was struck . . ."
