Ruben Bates (Isaac, George, John, Johannes), son of Isaac and Anna (Brainerd) Oatman, was born 3 January 1804, Vermont.

He married Sally Benedict on 11 October 1827. She was born ca 1813 in New York. They were living in Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont, in 1830.

"Reuben" B. and his wife Sarah M., were living in Albion, Oswego County, New York, in 1850, where Ruben's occupation was listed as a joiner.
