What Wave Issue 18

Released this one in November 1989 and came with another 4 song vinyl EP called 'A-Billy'. Actually we released 2 records at once cause the Legend Killers EP, 'Better Than Hammerin'' came out the same time as this ish, talk about being busy!. The original concept for this EP was that 1 side was supposed to be sludge, and the other side was supposed to be rockabilly and the 2 sides were supposed to fight for supremacy (or more like a tag team match in rasslin) as per Dave Clarke's amazing cover art.. Originally, the record was going to have House of Knives and Deja Voodoo as the sludge side, but House of Knives never came through with their song (they were also supposed to have an LP out on OG Records around the same time, but they never got the tapes to Gerard of OG). Instead, at the last minute, The Gruesomes came through with a killer version of Deja Voodoo's '3 Men 1 Coffin' (thanx guys) and we used them instead of the House of Knives. The flip side has the amazing Ray Condo and His Hardrock Goners and London's coolest band, the Sci-Phonics doing a laid back '4 Questions'. Unfortunately, this was around the time that records were not selling well, and everyone wanted CD's only. In fact, some stores stopped stocking records altogether and we had a hard time selling this issue. Every now and again this record shows up on EBay.

Cover art this time was by London comic book dealer Mike Robinson, who now is a lawyer right here in London. Back cover is a plug for the Legend Killers EP that came out the same time as this ish. 84 pages, jam packed with all kinds of stuff you needed to know to be cool back then.

Interviews this time with Long Gone John (SFTRI head honcho http://sympathyrecords.com/ ), Tonebenders and 1313 Mockingbird Lane. Articles on another benefit (ya, we're STILL hurtin', this sucker was milking us dry), The Smugglers, Dik Van Dykes, The Minstrels, Jr. Gone Wild, Frankenstein 5, Lost Patrol, Bruno Gerussi's Medallion, Jacklords, Legend Killers, Canadian 60's punk, The Seeds, Unknown Soldiers, frat rock, New Music Seminar in NYC, Italian sounds, The Storks, the newly created WW Hall Of Fame (Flamin' Groovies took top spot) and piles of other stuff in this 52 page monster. Still in print, email for details
