The image is, I learn, of a gopher snake and comes to us courtesy of photographer Shirley Curtis. Shirley has her own website where I saw the image first but it is also on the Animal Photo Archive where Shirley has permitted a very large number of her images to be displayed.
In Shirley's words "After I took his photo, I picked him up and put him in a bucket to transport to the desert outside my house. My, that snake was angry! I carried the bucket on the end of a hoe as he was making a racket and trying to bite me." Shirley, we thank you, even if the snake didn't!
