Fred and Winny began their journey together on August 21, 1964 in Burnaby, B.C. , Canada.

Their first home was an upstairs apartment in Vancouver, B.C. Every night they would walk to the Union Gospel Mission and help out in any way they could. They didn't have bus fair, that's why they walked. They helped out with the chapel service, singing (Winny helped with that), preaching, counselling and also with the serving of the soup, sandwiches and fruit that was given out each night to those who were at the service. God was very present, as they were able to touch the lives of many of those people in one way or another.

After some consideration and prayer God seemed to be leading them to apply to a Mission Hospital on the west coast of Vancouver Island (Esperanza). Winny was a Licensed Practical Nurse and could be used to work in the hospital. Fred never was too sure why God lead him there, but he was with Winny. While there they did a lot of work in and around the hospital and on the boats going to various logging camps and Native Indian villages taking movies to show and doing Sunday School. Everywhere they went was by boat, usually a 26 foot Clinker Built by the name of "the Bruce McLean." This was the name of a son of the Doctor in the hospital who was drowned in a boating accident in the "graveyard of the Pacific."

After a winter there, Fred and Winny are now on their way north by bus. They stopped to say good-bye to Winny's family in Burnaby and then stopped in Nelson, B.C. for a while with Fred's family. Then it's back on the Greyhound to Edmonton where they transferred to a bus heading north to Hay River in the North West Territories. There they stayed with the Pentecostal Pastor and his wife and family and caught a small plane for Fort Smith, North West Territories.

During this whole trip by bus, Winny is about 7 or 8 months pregnant with our first child.

OLIVE ANNE WALTON (Becker)
July 8,1965 Fort Smith, North West Territories

Winny and Fred moved into the basement of the Ron Ward's home when they arrived in Fort Smith. We lived there and helped Ron and Wendy with the ministry on the reserve. We did preaching, visiting and whatever else was needed. Then we found and moved into a converted garage where the running water was available when Fred was willing to run to get it other wise it walked.

While we were awaiting the arrival of our first little one we were made foster parents of two little brothers and a large German Shepherd dog who took real good care of the boy and the baby in the carriage. Fred had to find someone to look after the little ones when Winny went into the hospital to have Olive. She was in labour for 43 hours; Fred slept on a cot that the hospital wheeled into the room for him. Fred was not able to believe it was a girl until he held her and she took his heart.

While in Fort Smith in the North West Territories the local Nazarene Pastor went on holidays and Fred took care of the church for him while he was away. Fred also began driving cab in order to support the family. Then they moved into a larger house and Fred went to work for the local air freight Company; handling the freight coming into and going out of Fort Smith. He made many trips to Yellowknife, Norman Wells and Inuvik during this time as load master. We were still doing ministry in the Nazarene Church as youth sponsor and also still working with the Ward's on the reserve.

Our next move was to a call to pastor a church in Uranium City, Sask. While here Fred was again driving a bus taking men to work and picking them up from the Eldorado Uranium mine and mill site. He was also still working at the airport looking after the air freight for the same company that had the buses. He was responsible for picking up and delivering freight coming in and going out of the airport, air was the only way in to Uranium City. Along with other men from the church Fred was a volunteer fireman. During this time Winny was busy being a Pastors wife and a mom as while in Uranium City we were blessed with two more children.

ANNA-MARIE WALTON (Dirksen)
JULY 24, 1966 Uranium City, Sask.

Like so many small communities Uranium City was no different. A small hospital, but at this time with a lot of rules and regulation on some things and not so many on others. Fred could come and go pretty much at will, especially because he was the local pastor, this was only as far as the ward was concerned. He was stopped at the delivery room and could only look through the window in the door to see what was going on. Three days after Anna-Marie was born she was out at the Bible Camp with her mother. Just one year later we are welcoming our third addition.

FREDERICK ADRIAN WALTON
July 23, 1967 Uranium City, Sask.

At this time Fred and Winny have just bought their first house. Fred is now working for the mill at the Eldorado Uranium mill. This beautiful home is on a hill overlooking the lake. It is a beautiful view. Laurence, a foster child from Prince Albert, is living with us. Olive is starting to talk so he becomes LO LO. A great hockey player. He's around 14 when we have him living with us.

Fred quits his job at Eldorado and resigns from the church and so now with three little children it's time to travel again. It's onto a plane at Uranium City bound for Edmonton. Then in Edmonton we all pack into a train heading for Nelson, B.C.
