Introduction

What if you lived in a world with super powered people? I’m not talking about Superman, or Spiderman here, I’m talking about our world. What if there were some people, not a lot but some people with super powers in the real world. How would we react? How would we treat them? And in the real world; what might they be capable of accomplishing?

This is the premise of J. Michael Straczynski’s amazing comic book epic, Rising Stars. And with a talent like this on board you can believe that the story will deliver one hell of an interesting read. Straczynski, who brought the world the comic tale of Midnight Nation, the tv show Babylon 5, and is now entrenched in The Amazing Spiderman, and the post apocalyptic tv show Jeremiah, has done a fantastic job of fleshing out a really believable tale from a somewhat unbelievable idea. The set-up is simple. One night back in the early 60s a comet passed by the earth, casting a shadow over the small Midwestern town of Pederson, Illinois. There were exactly 113 children In Utero at the time of the passing. Something special happened to these unborn children, something incredible. They we’re born with special powers…

These powers didn’t start to manifest themselves right away of course, I mean who would really ever suspect that their child was a superman? But reveal themselves they did. And soon it was discovered that these children, dubbed the Specials by the media needed particular care.

Their powers were different from one another, some could fly, some were strong, but many were completely mundane like limited telekinesis, or telepathy. These children knew they were special, important; but they also knew that they we’re different, and would always be different.

The first act of this story takes place when the children are grown up, and coming into their own in the world. We follow the investigation of Poet, a special who like some has taken on a mantle, not of a superhero, but of a man driven, and tortured, searching for some sort of truth. We follow Poet as he tries to solve a mystery, very close to home. Someone has murdered one of his kind, and he has dedicated himself to finding out who it is before they strike again…
