Information, Resources and Data for Northeastern Virginia/West Virginia

Welcome to my corner of the internet. The following pages were created to return what was so freely given to me.

Researching in the Eastern Panhandle - Lower Shenandoah Valley of Va/ WVa.. can be a frustrating experience. Not only did the counties break apart many times but the state of Va. broke apart as well. I have seen the frustration on the genealogy message boards and I know that frustration well from my own personal research endeavors with this area.

This area is steeped in history and to find your ancestral roots here in this region would be an exciting adventure that I wouldn't want you to miss. They were embroiled in the Civil War. This was truly a region of brother against brother. How and where your ancestors lived is the backbone of knowing your people and part of what makes you who you are today.

Hopefully I will be able to bring some clarity to your situation and help you to continue until you discover all that is waiting for you should you find your trail leading this way.

I would like to thank Rhonda Houston for her willingness to assist myself and many others. Further information explaining how Rhonda has been such a good friend and mentor can be found on the following page.

For your convenience we have created an index chart below for easier navigation to your area of interest.

Good luck in your own personal research.

NORTHEASTERN VIRGINIA/WEST VIRGINIA LAND RECORD INFORMATAION

(Also pertains to the southeast counties of Pennsylvania)

Information for those who's ancestral trail leads into N.E. Va or the Eastern Panhandle (Jefferson, Berkeley & Morgan Co.) of West Virginia. The surveys were very poor and researching land records in this region is difficult.

Many of our ancestors followed the Great Wagon Road that went from Philadelphia through Winchester, Va. and nearly as far south as Augusta, Ga.

http://philnorf.tripod.com/mapofthe.htm Map of the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road

This was once one vast territory that spread north & west from the Williamsburg seat of government in Virginia. The area was consequently broken down into the following:

  1. Northumberland County: 1648-1652
  2. Lancaster County: 1652- 1656
  3. Old Rappahannock County: 1656 - 1691
  4. Essex County: 1691- 1720
  5. Spotsylvania County: 1720 -1734

The Virginia county of Spotsylvania broke into pieces starting in 1734. The land records for Spotsylvania Co. prior to 1734 are in the Library of Va.

Spotsylvania Co. breakdown is as follows:

  1. Orange Co. Va. formed in Jan. 1734
  2. Frederick Co. formed out of Orange Co. in 1738. However records were not kept until 1743.
  3. 'Old' Berkeley Co., Va forms in 1772- records begin.
  • Deeds begin in 1772. Index is handwritten. The following deed books are lost: 14; 22; 28; 37; 42; 56 and half of 59 & 62.
  • Land Grants, bound books, contain the index to Northern Neck Grants for Frederick Co, Va, Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties in Wv beginning in 1772.
  • Surveyor's records- reconstructed plat books beginning 1771, # 7 through # 18, indexed in the front of the book.
  • Land Books from 1782 to 1900 are not accessible to the public.
  • wills and deeds - 4 books
  • Unrecorded deeds - 4 books
  • Complete Record - Books 1 & 2 deal with real estate
  • Settlements.
Old Berkeley Co., Va split into the following:
    • Jefferson Co., Va. by act of the Gen. Assembly on Jan. 8, 1801. This took effect on Oct. 26, 1801.
    • Jefferson Co., Va. became part of WV on June 20,1863.
    • Morgan Co. was formed from Berkeley and Hampshire Co. in 1820. Land was not free here. Acquiring land came by way of Kings Patents. This breakdown was as follows:
King of England --> Gov. Gooch of Va. --> Lord Fairfax --> Grantors --> to be sold to settlers.

SURNAMES of a few of the 1st grantors /settlers in The Eastern Panhandle:

VAN METRE/METER brothers; HITE; MORGAN (2 family lines unrelated); Alexander ROSS, Samuel TAYLOR, Thomas SHEPHERD, Swearingen., Benjamin BURDEN, Andrew HAMPTON, David GRIFFITH, Lane GARRISON, Gershom KEES/KEYS, Robert BROOKE (surveyor)., to name just a few.

Many settlers were here as early as the 1730's. The survey for Harpers Ferry dates back to 1748. It was originally called The Hole. Smithfield (Middleway) was marked off on March 25,1734. Also known at one point as Wizard's Clip.

  • Article
  • General Jackson
    Shepherdstown Register Newspaper
    May 5, 1920.

'Stonewall was Sleepy". Dr. Hunter McGuire who was the surgeon of the "Stonewall Brigade" and the friend as well as the physician of Stonewall Jackson, in the course of some remembrances of that famous commander remarked upon the extraordinary knowledge which he seemed always to possess about the enemies movements.
Late at night after the last day's fighting at Malvern Hill, Dr. McGuire found General Jackson asleep by the side of a tree, while his faithful servant Jim was making coffee for him when he awoke. Just then several General officers came up.

They discussed the situation which they thought very serious. Their troops were scattered, they said, and if McClellan made an attack in the morning, they should have no organized force with him to resist him. General Jackson still slept and someone proposed to wake him. That was never an easy matter. Dr. McGuire says that he had seen Jim pull the General's boots off and remove his clothes without waking him. On the present occasion it was about impossible to rouse him. But at last he was raised to a sitting posture and held there, while one of the officers shouted in his ear about the conditions of the army, its inability to resist and attack in the morning and so forth.
General Jackson's reply was: "Please let me sleep. There will be no enemy there in the morning."
             So the event proved.
