Our Association History

Our"Retirees Association" was conceived early in 1990. Jack Rust and Frank Carey were having a quiet beer in Jack's basement. Frank suggested that the"Food Industry Old Boys" should form a group. Jack thought it was a good idea, talked to a few of the old boys who were retired from the trade. They decided, yes, it was a great idea, and decided to talk more about it.

"The Calgary Food & Associate Retirees of Southern Alberta" was born on August 19, 1990 in the boardroom of "Wallace & Carey Inc." At this first formal meeting of the group, the founding members laid out the by-laws of the "Association," formulated it's charter and signed the application for registry.

The first executive were as follows:

President - Hap Clark     Vice President - Llaird Phimester

Sec/Treasurer - Al Dilts    Charlie Longden - Director

Jack Rust - Director     Gordon Brown - Director

Bill Hall - Director    Wayne Smith - Director

Bill Cowie - Director

The names signed on the application were:

  • Jack Rust from the "Calgary Coop"

  • Charlie"Soupy" Longden from "Campell's Soup"

  • Gordon Brown from "Canada Safeway"

  • Hap Clark from "Western Grocers"

  • Al Dilts from "General Foods"

  • Llaird Phimester from "Horne & Pitfield Foods"

  • Bill Hall from "Associated Grocers Wholesale"

  • Also attending this first meeting were Wayne Smith from "Associated Grocers" and Gordon Corson from "Robin Hood Multi Foods"

The founders quickly enrolled more retirees in the "Association." By the time of their first get together, a luncheon at Canada Olympic Park, there were 60 members representing all the various facets of the Calgary and area "Food Industry" The cost of membership was set at $5.00 per year.

The first annual golf tournament was held on September 18, 1990, there were "forty spots" reserved. The tournament was held at the "Carstairs Golf & Country Club."

Although it was projected that all functions held by the association would be self sustaining, a financial cushion was made possible by the generous cash donations from "Wallace and Carey," and "Associated Grocers." So here we are almost fifteen years later, still going strong and having more fun than ever.
