history.
The Calgary Flames weren’t always the Calgary flames they use to be the
Atlanta Flames. The Atlanta flames become the Calgary Flames 1981. During
the of the seven seasons of the Atlanta flames there were three head
coaches. There were Bernie Geoffin, Fred Crerghton, and Al Macniel coached
them to a 39 win’s 27 loses 92 point season. Their best season during the
seven years was when Fred Creighton coached them to a 41 win 31 loses, and
90 point season in 80 games in the 1978-1979 season.
Well some of the best players to play for the Calgary flames would have to
be Tim Bernhart he was born in Sabrina Ontario Jan. 17 1958. He was also
Atlanta's 2end draft pick and choice 47th over all in 1978.
Transferred to Calgary after Atlanta's franchise relocated, June 24 1980 he
was drafted to Toronto maple leafs. He was named the OMJJHL west second
all-star team with Cornwall Royals. Lanny MacDonald was an incredible player
he was born on Feb, 16 1953 in Hanna Alberta drafted 4th over all
in 1973 he played professionally in 1973 until 1989.Allan McInnis born July,
11 1963 in Inverness, Nova Scotia Canada. He is 6 foot 2 204 lbs. He started
1981 he is still playing now in 2005 for St. Louis blues. And now today one
of the best
Players in the NHL Jerome Iginla born on July, 1 1971 in Edmonton Alberta.
Jerome was born to a white mother America she was and a Nigerian farther. He
was the 11th draft pick for dalles stars and then traded to the
flames with Joe Nieuwendyk. His best was 2001-2002 with 96 points and 52
goals. Trevor Kidd one of the best goalies in NHL history was born in Dugald
Manitoba March 29 1972 his nick name was Kidder. He was Calgary 1st
draft choice, and he was 11th over all in the 1990’s entry draft.
He was named one WHL east first team with the spoken chiefs 1990
When the Atlanta flames first started they played at the stamped
corral. And now today in the 23erd season they play in the Pengroth Canadian
airlines saddle dome in Calgary which is one of the best interment
facilities in North America. The saddle dome now seats.
The Atlanta flames were formed in 1972 and sadly ended 7 years later. The
teams name was carried over from when it was the Atlanta flames with the
flaming where the name was derived from the burning of Atlanta’s by unions
forced during the America civil war (1861-1865). And they were founded by a
businessman Ted Turner. The Calgary flames where formed in 1982 and it is
there 23erd year well it would be if the NHL was still around.
The reason the formed is the same reason that every team does
to have a team, to make more money and have more bussing in the city.
The flames have been one of the most consistent teams in the
NHL, qualifying for the mid 1970’s to the late 1990’s. Calgary flames
reached the Stanly cup finals twice during the late 1980’s winning the
league champion ship in 1989. The 1990 Calgary flames went on winning many
division champion ships and reached the the playoffs numerous times but they
failed to advance in the post season. In 1995 the traded Mike Vernon to the
Detroit Red Wings. The first year the flames were in the coached Al McNeil
coached the flames to a 30 win 27 lose and a 92 point season. They finished
3rd in the Patric Division and 7th over all. They
advanced to the Stanly cup semi finals after missing the 1980-1981season
beating the Chicago 3-0 and Philadelphia until they lost to Minnesota 2-4. A
few season later when they drafted Lanny MacDonald he lead them in scoring.
Some of there individual points are retired #numbers Lanny McDonald #9, most
season played Al McInnis, most games 803, most goals 830 Theo Fleury but
that is not just in one season that would be in possible that was in all the
season he played with the Atlanta/Calgary flames.
Some of the team’s points are most points 117 at the start of 2001-2002.
Most wins in a season is 54J.
Most loses in a season is 41L.
Most goals against is 345. After missing the post season every year from
1997-2003, the team went all the way to the Stanly cup finals in 2004,
despite leading the series 3 games to 2. The Calgary flames who came wit a
goal from winning the 2004 Stanly cup actually missed the play offs the year
before. In time that accomplishment will be recognized as one of the
greatest turnarounds in sports history.
