For this project I am going to talk about hip-hop and Jazz. What are some of the interactions and more? If you want to learn some steps for hip-hop then keep reading and enjoy.
Today if you ask most people to give a definition of “rap”, they’re likely to state that it’s the reciting of rhymes to the best of music. It’s a form of truth that finds its roots deep within its self African culture and oral tradition. Through out history in America there has always been some form of verbal or involving rhymes within the Afro-American community. Theses are some of the names and ways that various forms of rap: Titanic, the Dozens, school yard rhymes, prison jail house' rhymes and double Dutch jump rope' rhymes.
Hip-hop started in Bronx New York. Modern day rap music finds roots in the talk over elements of reggae music. In the early 70's, a Jamaican d.j known as Kool Herc (Clive Cambell) moved from Kingston to NY's West Bronx. Here, he attempted his Jamaican style of D.J which involved reciting rhymes over the versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately, New Yorkers weren't into reggae at the time. Thus Kool Herc adapted his style by chanting over the instrumental of the day's popular songs. Because these breaks were relatively short, he learned to extend them indefinitely by using an audio mixer and two identical records in which he continuously replaced the desired segment. In those early days, young party goers initially recited popular phrases and used the slang of the day. For example, it was fashionable for D.J to acknowledge people who were in attendance at a party. These early raps featured someone such as Herc shouting over the instrumental break; 'Yo this is Kool Herc in the joint-ski saying my mellow-ski Marky D is in the house'. This would get the crowd going. They began to call out their own names and slogans. Kool Herc’s favourite celebrity is James Brown.
Hip-hop is the past and current experience as well as the collective of w any music of the past, it also expresses mainstream American ideas that have now been internalized and into the psyches of American people of color over time. Part of the learned was sexism and misogyny. Hip-hop can be very fun to learn. Once you get all the steps together it will look very cool.
