What Wave Issue 5

Published December 1984. This was the first issue put out by Dave and Rena O'Halloran (actually Rena was still a Macdonald, as we weren't married at this time). This was our first attempt at publishing and it looks pretty pathetic compared to later issues. There are photocopied pages with poorly reproduced pictures, but the level of enthusiasm is definitely there.

Contained interviews with UIC, Deja Voodoo, and Katrina and the Waves. Also articles on The Fuzztones (we had just come back from NYC and seen the 'Tones with The Tryfles and Pandoras and were blown away by all 3 bands, part of the inspiration for us to carry on the What Wave tradition that former editor Al Cole was getting bored with-or was it just too much work for Al?),The Slickee Boys (we had just seen them in NYC as well, they were the first modern garage band that we really dug), Gun Club, Fleshtones (we had just seen them OPEN(?) for Billy Bragg and Echo and the Bunnymen in Toronto), Raunch Hands, DMZ, Napalm Babys and assorted other junk. First 50 copies came with a free halloween candy. The kids never came to our door on halloween because we lived on the 2nd floor of a house and our entrance was at the rear, up a bunch of rikety wooden stairs. This issue is long out of print.
