The image was taken in March 2001 at Cape May Point Lighthouse located on the southern tip of the peninsula south of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Gary tells us that the lighthouse was built in 1859 and that the light can be seen from 19 miles out at sea. I gather that a lighthouse keeper is no longer required to keep the beacon operating. Automation has changed all of that, more's the pity in my view. But the site is still manned today, I learn, and I am glad to hear that.
