1264 @ Crianlarich
5 Oct 02
During the week before the above date I had been visiting Skye, to complete climbing all the Munros in the Cuillin, by ascending INPIN. On Sat 5 Oct I returned to Crianlarich, where I had reserved a night at the Youth Hostel adjacent to Crianlarich Station. I had received information in the Thompson B1 newsletter that 1264 was booked on a photographic charter from Fort William to Crianlarich, but unfortunately that was all the information given...no times or further details.
I arrived at Crianlarich about 1.30 pm, and eventually made my way on to the station around 2 pm. It was clear that something was about to happen, as photographers kept appearing, and conversations with others showed that 1264 was indeed due to appear that day.
Accordingly, at about 4.30 pm I took up a prime position outside the station, at a slight bend in the road, which gave a good view of the approach over the nearby bridge, and showed the curve prior to the junction with the line to Oban.
Eventually a gaggle of photographers arrived nearby, and took up their positions some way behind. Then 62012 appeared...where was 1264?..not knowing it was to be double headed!...also, the number on the second engine was not 1264, but a close inspection later of the cab side plate revealed the secret..it WAS 1264 in disguise. Enjoy my pix of the event...a real case of being in the right place at the right time!...I could never have travelled the 2 X 335 miles especially for this.
