My Family

In the Beginning:

Descendants of TRAVERS

FIRST GENERATION

1. TRAVERS.

He was married. TRAVERS had the following children:

+2 i. John TRAVERS*.

SECOND GENERATION

2. John TRAVERS* was born on 26 Nov 1744 in Ireland. He died in 1815 in Hopetown, Bonaventure, Quebec.

He was married to Sarah TOWNSEND* (daughter of TOWNSEND) on 26 Oct 1760 in Belfast, Ireland. From Desendants of John Travers:

Marriage notes are in Belfast Cathedral, Northern Ireland. From Descendants of John Travers:

John Travers was a soldier with the British Army. He married Sarah Townsend, in Belfast, Ireland, I am not sure if he was stationed there when they married, or, if he was from Belfast, Ireland, originally. I suspect, though, that he was Irish. According to a present day John Travers of Ballyshannon County of Donegal, Ireland (who posted on December 4th 1998 to Genforum and whose email address is travers@tinet.ie the surname TRAVERS is common in South Donegal and North Leitrim as well as Wexford. He writes that the English name Travers comes from the Norman/French "Traver"meaning plowman. In Irish it is O TREABHAIR (TROWER).

Our John Travers' wife and children moved with him to New York and their daughter, Margaret was born in New York, in 1772. After the American Revolution, the family settled in East Nouvelle, (Shigawake), in the Province of Quebec, Canada.

This is an excerpt from a letter written by Eleanor Blois Hall responding to a genealogy query from the Rev. Alfred Traverse:

Dear Sir:

In reply to your letter on November 13th, I have put your name and address in SPEC in our Loyalist 200 Column for information on the Travers family. I have found these bits that you may find useful:

John Travers, soldier and farmer

Residence: East Nouvelle (Shigawake)

Served His Majesty for 36 years

Soldier of 26th and 44 Regiment of Foot

Hopetown - James Travers applied for (or received) land in 1807 to the Honorable Thomas Dunn.

These excerpts are from original documents - 1807 End of excerpt

Interesting information on the 26th Regiment of Foot is that is was also known as the Cameronian Regiment of Foot.

Further information of the 44th Regiment of Foot details this regiment as East Essex Regiment (44th Foot)

This regiment was formed in 1741 as Long's Regiment, then in 1751 it was numbered as the 44th Foot. In 1782 it was designated the 44th or East Essex Regiment then in 1881 it was renamed simply the Essex Regiment.

The regiment has a distinguished history, having fought at Waterloo in 1815 and throughout the Crimean War 1854 - 1856, as well as numberous other famous and not-so-famous battles. Excerpted from:

"New Carlisle, Sources of Genealogical Information Prior to 1820" written by Raymond Garrett.

He writes:

Due to the poor harvest of 1816 the govrnment alloctaed 100 barrels of flour to be sent to New Carlisle and rationed to the residents. This occurred in a age before the birth of the welfare state; the flour was not given away. It was sold at the rate of 4 pounds (sterling) per barrel! "If the person could not pay in cash, an equivalent amount of lumber (960 square feet of pine plank) to be used in the construction of the county jail or firewood (8 cords) was accepted."

And from the 1816 "Untitled Refief Book", included in Raymond Garrett's article, are these entries:

Mrs John Travers, Resident of East Nouvelle, a widow: Claim made by her (sic) son-in-law William Huntington. Her late husband served with 26th and 44th Regiments of Foot for 36 years.
