Barbara arrived on the Island at the age of 16, she, her father and brothers settled on the P line in the area of Kitchen's Hill. Barbara's father was Edward Van Horn, a preacher who was instrumental in building the church on the mountain at the cemetery on the P line. He is buried in the Grace United Cemetery on the Bishop homestead.

She was married to Henry Edward (Harry) BISHOP (son of John Samuel BISHOP and Barbara CALVIN) on 25 Aug 1880 in Marksville, St. Joseph Island, Ontario. They settled on a farm near the K Line about 2 miles from Marsville, now Hilton Beach. Soon afterward, though they moved down into the village. Henry arrived at St. Joseph Island with his parents aboard the SS Ploughboy in 1860. The next day was his third birthday. The Bishop homestead was the northwest lot at the intersection of the Base Line and the Hilton Road. This area became known as Bishops Corner. Their home was located just north of the present Hilton Township office. At one time a small white Methodist Church was situated on this lot at the site where the Grace United Cemetery is now located.

Harry became the agent for the Massey Machinery Co. afterwards known as Massey-Harris and in turn Massey Ferguson. He travelled all over the Island taking orders. The first boat to arrive in the spring would deliver the machinery which had to be assembled. John, who assisted with the business and his father would then set up the various implements. When all was ready, a large picnic was arranged and people came from all over the Island to receive their piece of machinery.

Harry and Barbara were very active in the development of the community. Barbara was a staunch supporter of the little white chuurch at the cemetery on the hill. When that closed she worked with the United Church in Hilton Beach. During the constructions of the brick school the men working on the project boarded with Barbara and daughter Victoria. Harry was reeve of Hilton township for many years and was very active in trying to get a bridge to the mainland.

The sons, Jon and Pulford, both served in the irst World War with the machine gun corps. During the battle of Passchendaele in October 1918 John was woulded on the 24th and Pulford was killed on the 28th.

They celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary at the picnic grounds on Gawas Bay where they were presented with a wicker rocking chair which is still cherished by the family.

82. Benjamin Levi VAN HORN*20 was born on 16 Oct 1879 in Osprey Twp, Ontario. He died on 14 Nov 1940 in Snowdon, Saskatchwan.

Levi's ancestry was that his family were Pennsylvania Dutch Extraction and they were Quakers. He worked at farming on the Manitoulin Island and would take his animals to Gore Bay for shipment. In the winter he would go to logging camps and Teeny and their children would take care of the farm. Times were tough on the island so in 1922 he packed up his family and went to Saskatawan to homestead. Levi took the train and rode in the cattle car along with his stock that he brought with him. After settling around Snowden, Saskatchewan, he told of the time he went to Moosejaw in the horse and buggy and on his way home and snowstorm blew up and how hard it was to get back home. Apparently, his team got on the wrong track, one horse having it easier, while the other was off the trail. When he did get home he had a pair of pretty tired horses and Levi wasn't in too great of spirits either. Other times, during a snowstorm, farmers would tie a rope around them, just to go to the barn. If they didn't it was quite possible to get lost in a blizzard, and freeze to death, only ten feet from the buildings. Times seemed to get harder out west when the depression hit. Uncle Gordon told me he would never eat another carrot as long as he lived, because carrots and potatoes were all they had one winter. At one time Levi went to the food office for a bag of flour and sugar and they told him that he had nothing to give to them, his reply was that he wasn't going home empty handed and sat there all day. At the end of the day, when they wanted to close up, Levi was still there, they gave him his bag of flour and sugar. Levi had a blood disorder, from what I'm told it was leukemia and he died there in 1940.

A story my mother (Mae Van Horn) told to me when remembering Uncle Bill was that he weighed only about 1 1/2 pounds when he was born, and to keep him alive they put him in a large matchbox with cotton wool, feed him with an eyedropper and laid him on the open wood stove door keeping him warm, acting like a incubator. Another story Mae told me about her Uncle Bill and Aunt Annie was that when her family would visit them, when Mae was a child, was that her Aunt Annie would always offer bread and jam to them. Mae regarded this as a very nice treat because everyone then had a hard time making ends meet and Aunt Annie made her feel special. I remember meeting my Great Uncle Bill, early in the sixtys, when I was a very young teenager, to me he was a very pleasant man to be around.
