A SELF-HELP SUPPORT GROUP FOR GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN and DENIED ACCESS GRANDPARENTS.
MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to welcome all grandparents who are raising or seeking access to their grandchildren. This is a safe place to obtain support, resources, information and guidance as we parent for the second time around! Confidentiality is a must for everyone!
GOAL STATEMENT
1) GRANDPARENTS AND EXTENDED FAMILIES: Advocate for legislative change to RECOGNISE custodial care by extended family members as a legitimate intervention. In other words, grandparents should be given a STATUS and not have to fight for Custody or financial assistance from government.
2) LAYAWAY: Grandchildren have the "RIGHT" to get on with their lives when biological parents have been deemed by the court incapable of raising them and not be put on "LAYAWAY" waiting to see "WHEN" and "IF".
3) CHILDREN’S AID SOCIETIES: Connecting with extended families when children are brought into foster care to help with decision making.
4) FUNDING: Grandchildren have the "RIGHT" for their caregivers (Grandparents) to receive the FINANCIAL and EMOTIONAL support comparable to Foster Parents.
5) VISITATION: Grandchildren have the "RIGHT" to access in all Provinces to visit their Grandparents. Children in most cases should never be denied access to their extended families.
6) COMMUNITY SUPPORT for assisting Grandparents raising Grandchildren. Respite care for children may be needed during times of short term illnesses or accidents of their caregivers.
What we would like to see is "RIGHTS" for Grandchildren, not us. What should be recognised by Government is the special needs of Grandparent-headed households. Our Grandchildren cannot speak for themselves. We must advocate for the best interests of all Grandchildren in our care!
