Rants and Raves

Dec 27/07 Finally got around to fixing up some of the messed up links on this site, there's probably lots more still messed up...but what the hey. We have a myspace site (see links page) and a Garage Punk Hideout page (again see the links page) that are updated with the playslists from the radio show weekly. There's lots of pix of recent shows here in London on both of those sites. Check them out if you have the time.

Mar 20/05: Guess it's about time to update this page as it's been quite awhile. Had to move the website to a new location due to changes at Rogers. Some of the links still don't work but they'll get fixed up sometime.

Now you can hear What Wave on the radio each week. Ya, that's right, Radio What Wave hits the air every thursday evening from 7 till 8:30 on 94.9 CHRW Radio Western. It'll either be myself (Dave) or Mike from Speed City Records  hosting the show, bringing you the coolest garage/power pop/punk/rockabilly/surf/protopunk and all kinds of other cool stuff that never gets played around these parts. You can also tune in live via the web by clicking on CHRW, just above, and listen live. And, the shows are archived for one week at the CHRW website so you can listen at your leisure!!

THEE CAVE COMES ALIVE! – Songs From The Lost “What Wave” Tapes

is now out this coming monday!!  It's on Action Records from Greece and the front cover features none other than The Royal Nonesuch!  The tracks are all taken from the 10 cassette tapes that we released with WW over the years.  Most of the tracks have been cleaned up a little for that maximum fuzz effect. Ask for it at your local record shop. Here's a rundown of the track list:

THE GRUESOMES                 I Try

THE CHESSMEN                   Pretty Girl

THE CREATURES                  The Acid Test

Locally, you should be able to get the record at Speed City Records or Grooves Record Store here in London. Or you could always try catching the Legend Killers at a show, they may have some to sell. And speaking of the Legend Killers, check out the CD they released recently, it's a collection of stuff they recorded from 88 to 92, back when they were playing every weekend.  Some of the material may be familiar as there's a couple of songs from their EP and a couple have appeared on WW complilation tapes.  Also check them out live, saw them once and they put on a great show, playing lots of the old faves along w/several Flamin' Groovies tunes. 6/2/02 Finally another update. Saw the Dictators last nite, right here in London at CTO. Unbelievable show!! All the old hits, everything from Minnesota Strip to Loyola to Science Gone Too Far to Faster and Louder to Stay. Bunch of stuff from the new album too (and a killer album that is! well worth searching for, even comes in vinyl!) I Am Right, Avenue A and a couple others. 2 real cool cover tunes as well, Sonic Reducer and a tune for Joey, Blitzkrieg Bop. 3 encores, 90 rockin' minutes, and my ears are still ringing almost 24 hours later and I was wearin' earplugs! Easily the best show this kid's seen in ages!! Check them out if you ever get a chance! You won't be disappointed.

2/17/02 Ya, finally, an update, time goes by way too fast around these parts. Saw the Chickens 2/8 here in London, as usual an excellent show!! These guys rock /pop and roll like there's no tomorrow, if you haven't got their CD yet, get out there and get it now! My fave CD of 2001!!! See below for a link to their website.

Current faves are:

Chickens, 4 outta 5 members of the late 80's early 90's garage band UIC get back together with another guitarist and blast out a bunch of poppy/garagey/punky tunes on their 1st CD. Perfect for those hot summer days when the top's down and your cruisin to the beach with the tunes blastin. http://www.thechickens.com/Sound.html

Detroit Cobras, what can you say about that voice. Thick, husky and reeking of that thick smoke in a club after a rockin show. 2 LP's so far on SFTRI, grab em before they become the media darlings that they deserve to be.

Fat Possum Records Been picking up lots of stuff on this label lately. Lots of raw, earthy blues, nothing like the white boy blues that's been popular for way too long. This is the REAL thing, raw and uncompromising blues in various styles, everything from delta to Chicago to acoustic to even some stuff that has tape loops and other modern stuff. Haven't found anything that i don't dig on this label yet. http://www.fatpossum.com/home.html

Speaking of blues, picked up a book called 'Mississippi The Blues Today' by Robert Nicholson. This gives the dirt on a lot of Fat Possum artists, as well as others that should, or maybe sometime will be on the label. Picked this
one up for a coupla bucks in the delete bins, well worth searching for.

Listening to lots of Howlin' Wolf (the earlier the better), Lightning Hopkins, Yardbirds (Charly Box set from the early 80's, man those cats could rock), R.L. Burnside (see Fat Possum, above), Flamin' Groovies , Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers (boogie at it's finest), Monks, Swingin' Neckbreakers, Compulsive Gamblers, Oblivians, and tons of other cool stuff. Just got The Excessories CD, Pure Pop for Punk People on SFTRI, cross between the Muffs and Nikki Corvette! Title sums it all up.
