What a beautiful image of a Giant Swallowtail Butterfly! (Heraclides cresphontes) The image appears here thanks to photographer Mark C. Cassino of Kalamazoo, Michigan. You should not miss his fine website where you will find that he not only shows a great number of his fine images but also offers guidance to help others take similar pictures. His website is  here.

A very large butterfly, 3 5/8" - 5 1/2", indeed the largest North American butterfly, the Giant Swallowtail is found throughout most of North America but is more common in the South and south central states. Known as the "Orange Dog" for its bright orange wing spot (not too visible in this image), the butterfly is sometimes considered to be a citrus pest.
