The Soviet image (PhotoArt of Nature) archive has proved to be a fruitful source of images. But I wish that I knew the name of the photographer, whose fine image of a Common Loon (Gavia immer) I display above. The original image used to be seen here but it now links incorrectly. When I have some time, I will try to restablish the correct URL. This lovely bird, whose haunting call echoes across so many lakes in the Northern hemisphere, is in dramatic breeding plumage.
