Stuff not having to do with DooM

Music: The Soother of the Savage Beast

This portion of the page is dedicated to the music I love, and makes fun of the music you like! Actually, in all seriousness, it's only to talk about the music I love and the awesome music I have discovered if and when I do. I'll try not to bash anything, but I'm an opionated ass, so that might not work out so well so we'll see. I might have a few sound mp3's up, but not bloody likely because of my 15 meg page limit, so what is here is what is here. Also, everything is, or will be in alphabetical order so you won't have a great deal of difficulty finding the music groups, if you're interested.

AC/DC

If you're into the lighter side of heavy metal, if there's such a thing, AC/DC's the group to go with. The guitar work is simple but great, the lyrics are not too bad, and overall, it's just fun music. They've been around for quite awhile (30 years, i think), and they can still play, if you know what I mean. Although their newer stuff is not as good as their past work, it's still excellent, and is most certainly a sign of the band's maturity.

Aerosmith

Although I really don't like their newer cd all that much, it's not fair to shun their previous works. Personally, I thought their best was Nine Lives because it is one of the most cosmopolitan rock cd's out there. it blends everything from hard rock to "softer" metal. Also, their stuff from the 80's gives that decade a slight saving grace, musically speaking. Nothing very poppy, but nothing too artsy, either. And that's the way rock should be.

Black Sabbath

In truth, I only own one Black Sabbath CD, Dehumanizer, and the only one I have heard apart from that is Paranoid. But, I must say that neither suck, and the style with and without Ozzy is similar but different. Well, obviously, because the two cd's are around a couple decades apart, but both are excellent, because of the commentary as well as the musical proficiency. But then again, it's also 'Sabbath.

Alice Cooper

Mr. Cooper's been around for a LONG time. Well, so far that I know of, anyhow. But I really haven't heard much besides his newest cd Brutal Planet, which I absolutely love. Nothing like some really dark social commentary. And he even had the stones to bring the Columbine shooting. I, however, have nothing against that because i believe in freedom of speech. Hell, I just liked the commentary all around, because he really does tell it like it is.

Dream Theatre

I really like these guys, not only because they are really damn good, but they have a song for for every emotion one can experience...well, except happiness, but it's progressive metal, what do you expect, right? Their playing skill is excellent, and their lyrics are just great. Also, they have a song that puts Bohemian Rhapsody in the dust, called A Change of Seasons. It's a multi-part song, but very indepth, and flows very smoothly through each transition. Also, their more recent release, Scenes From a Memory was incredible.

Bob Dylan

I only have one of his cd's, Highway 61 Revisited, i think. And whether or not you like social commentary, it's just a cool cd. I really like his playing style, as well as his passive way of saying "fuck you". It's very hard to say it without using the words, I should know.

Halford

Rob Halford's the ex-lead singer from Judas Priest, and he's back in metal again doing what he does best: screaming his lungs out. Don't get me wrong, a lot of stuff is really cool...well, except from his homosexual stuff. That really pisses me off, that's why I skipped through half of his cd Ressurection. One of his works really stands out though, which is Silent Screams. I think this song is awesome, because I can really relate to it. But, it's also very, very well done. His Live: Insurrection release is also very good, with a mix of Halford stuff, Fight stuff, and old Judas Priest stuff. A must have for any metal fan.

Judas Priest

These guys are just awesome. If you're really into old-school metal, Judas Priest is the band for you. The guitar work is awesome, especially on some of the older stuff, like Freewheel Burning or Painkiller. Some of their older work, like Stained Class and Victim of Changes are some of the best songs I've ever heard. Lyrically, I wouldn't say they are the best, but some of their stuff is just so damn cool, like Breaking the Law. Also, they get quite experimental. Their cd Ram It Down may not have been the best sounding, but it was one of the most sophistated, because many of the songs all have their own distinct sound, as opposed to, in most cases, most of the songs adhere to a specific sound formula. Also, their newer cd was awesome because it did the same thing, although much more effectively. So, if you want to just expand your metallic horizons, this is one of the groups that are must when you choose to do so.

Kiss

In all honesty, I really don't like Kiss's work all that much. I bought Psycho Circus because I thought it wouldn't be all that bad, and man was I ever wrong. Pyscho Circus itself is a cool song, but a lot of the stuff in between it and the last song, "Journey of 1000 Years", are pure crap. A lot of it is "praise us 'cause we're so great" stuff. Yeah right, you guys couldn't hold a candle to the competition. However, Journey of 1000 Years, and one other song, both written by Gene Simmons are absolutely excellent, as well as "Dreaming", written by Paul Stanley. If you're a Kiss fan, I'd say get it. Otherwise, don't.

Megadeth

I'm surprised Metallica hasn't sued THESE guys for plagiarism, because their stuff sounds a little too much like it. You know, just like Iron Maiden sounds a little too much like Judas Priest (Don't argue this point with me). However, I really enjoyed 1000 Times Goodbye.

Ministry

I just started getting into industrial, besides Rammstein, and decided to start with these guys, so I picked up/ordered (Ain't the internet grand? :op) Greatest Fits. It rocks, 'nuff said. I especially liked the sacreligiousness of "Jesus Built My Hotrod".

Motörhead

These guys just rock. Not just because they do metal, but because they do metal with some braincells behind it. I only have their cd Snakebite Love, but it's just an awesome cd blending a mix of metal and social commentary (love the song "Take the Blame"), and just sounds great.

Monster Magnet

I may not know art, but I know what I like. These guys have a sound that is, although wierd as hell, is very cool nonetheless. I only have their cd Powertrip, but I really like it. It's hard and very surreal, and it's not anything that I would say is "poppish".

Pantera

I only have their cd Cowboys From Hell, but I absolutely love it. It's heavy, it's brutal, and...my goodness, it's semi-intellectual! Now, that was a huge shocker. If you ask why, well...most of the stuff I listen to that is as heavy as Pantera is usually not that...intelligent (sorry, lacking better use for a word). Anyways so yeah, this is an excellent cd because it has a shock value that shock-rock can't give.

Primal Fear

Again, I only have one of their cd's so I don't have much to say...especially since it's their first. But, just because it's their first doesn't mean it sucks. Actually, in my opinion, I think the cd rocks. It's pretty much a return to the old days when the power bands ruled the metal world. Well, kind of...Anyways, the guitar work is fast and furious, and although the lyrics aren't much...well, it is friggin' metal, isn't it?!

Rammstein

This is one of the few industrial metal bands I like, and a lot of it has to do with the fact that their music is all in German. I've read the translations, and I really have to to say, it's pretty whacked. But it doesn't mean it's bad. Although they really do not bring much that's really new to music, they at least use what they have with skill, and therefore I think that makes them one of the best out there. It ain't whatcha got, it's how ya use it.

Joe Satriani

Joe Satriani's a guitarist, and pretty damn experimental one at that. Going from the fun, bouncy stuff from the 80's to the more electronic work of the 90's the transition as very suitable of the world in which we live. He plays for emotions ranging from basic happiness to erotic. He also plays with great skill, and yes, there is a "but". his music seems to lack that which it creates, as it follows a very similary rythmic patter to modern dance music.

Steve Vai

This guy is just amazing, blows Satriani right out of the water as both a guitarist and musician. Although some of his stuff can be wierd at times, it is not terrible at all. Songs such as "Fire Garden Suite", "Frank", a tribute to Vai's late friend and one-time bandmate, Frank Zappa who he used to play for, and "OOOO" are just excellent pieces. He stands out from the crowd because he plays his heart, period, and thus his music truly is food for the soul.

Frank Zappa

Okay, this guy may be wierd, but his music reeks of tongue-in-cheek humour that simply cannot be ignored (ever heard "Valley Girl"?). His guitar work is also superb, and thus his death was a sharp blow to music, period.

Rob Zombie

I really don't have much to say about him, because until the end of this month, he only has 2 cd's out, Hellbilly Deluxe and American Music Made to Strip By, which is a remix of the former. I will say that his music is cool. I have no idea what it's about, but I really don't care, because I just like the sound. it's hard, it's loud, it's dark, it's metal, period.

White Zombie

Rob Zombie's former band, these guys rock(ed). If you don't believe me, you obviously need to check out their song "More Human Than Human". The remixes on Supersexy Singin' Songs isn't too bad either, although pretty dancy, if I must say. But it rocks, period. And it goes great with DooM.

ZZ Top

This is really what got me started listening to music, and got me into hard rock. Specifically, their album Eliminator. And, I was 3 years old, and thought the song "Legs" was the best thing, ever. Good thing I've grown up, eh? I still listen to it, too, but I like their older works better, specifically Deguëllo. That is one of the funniest cd's I've ever heard, with "She Loves My Automobile", "Manic Mechanic", and of course "Hi-Fi Mama". Great stuff for mellowing out.

More to come as I expand my horizons!!
