Stormy was born around October 9, 2000 to Simoom. Like most young whales, Stormy's saddle patch was pretty much not there, or if it is, its very dark. However, since the ID photo above was from when Stormy was just born, the saddle patch would later become much more noticeable as he grew.
Stormy was at first pretty easy to identify, considering he/she was the baby, always tucked up against mom. But even though Stormy enjoyed the postition for a year longer than Simoom's other children, he/she was then nudged out of the way by a new baby. Stormy spent most of her/his time with mom and younger sibling Hope. The fin was sharply curved, rather like big sis Eclipse.
Sadly, Stormy's life was cut short in early summer 2006, when researchers reported the little whale missing. It came as a surprise to everyone, since the 6-year-old had looked healthy and energetic, and had been hunting well last year. We'll probably never know what happened.
He/She was named after Stormy Point on BC's central coast.
