Bare Facts: Male ~ Born 1990 ~ Mother Simoom ~ Father Unknown ~ Children Unknown ~ ID Tall, sprouting fin; unmarked saddle; rounded tip; fin bending strongly to the left

Echo was born on October 18, 1990 to Simoom. The day he was born, the four adult A12 members (Scimitar, Nimpkish, Pulteney and Simoom) were in front of Orcalab around Blackney Pass. Then they left for a little bit, and later that day, Simoom returned with a tiny little calf beside her! Scimitar was close by, while Nimpkish and Pulteney floated together a little further off.
Echo is the first of her five children and has helped her with baby-sitting a few of them.
Echo plays a lot with his uncle Nimpkish, also known as Uncle 33. Echo's a very playful whale (he should be, considering who his mother is!), often playing in the kelp beds with Simoom. Lately though, Simoom's been busy with her new calves, and Echo's been busy growing up.
Echo's around the age that his fin starts to 'spout', and its almost Nimpkish's size now (though a lot more wobbly!). He's one of the whales that make the A12s easy to identify.
Echo was probably named after Echo Bay, which is 26 miles from Port McNeill.
It should be noted that the ID photo above is 7 years old, and his fin is more than twice that size now. The tip is still rounded and it's slightly shorter than his brother's. His fin is also bending strongly to the left, as of 2006. This is why we need a new ID book!
In 2006, Echo seemed to show very strong interest in Klaskish/B14, so maybe we should be marking our calendars for a B-Pod birth! However, it seems more likely that Echo was just trying out his lady-skills, as most orca fathers are well past maturity.
