A4 was fully grown when the study began, and since he was a male, his age couldn't be determined by the age of his children. So while we believe he was born around 1952, this could be wrong up to five years, or possibly more.
We don't know who his mother was, but he traveled with his probable sister, A10, who was around 11 years older than him.
When the study began, he was a full grown male with two nicks on his fin, the larger one near the top. He traveled with his sister, his nieces Kelsey and Yakat, and his niece/nephew A19.
The year the study began, however, A19 died at under one year.
For a while the family was a family of four, traveling with the other Apod whales. Then in 1974, A4 gained a greatniece and great-nephew, when Yakat gave birth to Skagit, and four years later, Skeena.
In 1981, the family experienced another loss when Kelsey had her first calf and it died within the year.
Then in 1983, many things happened. Yakat gave birth to Siwiti, Kelsey gave birth to Sutlej, and A10 gave birth to A47. Later, A10 and A47 were shot and killed at the rubbing beaches.
The next year, A4 also passed away.
