United Church
The United Church, also known as the Methodist
Church, was in operation by the late 1860's. The teacher,
Simon Reid from Old Perlican, received ten shillings (50 dollars) per year.
The number of students at that time were between the ages of
thirty and forty. Besides teaching Mr. Reid conducted church services, Sunday
school, marriages, baptisms, and funerals. Before this people had to go to
Carbonear for such services and events.
Anglican Church
St. Matthew's Anglican Church was
built in 1880 by members of the community. The women of the church often had
sewing classes there so they could make items to sell to raise money to get oil
for the lamps in the church. The oil cost eight cents per gallon in those
times. Today
the church is different in appearence than when it was built. The first tower
was taken down in 1915 and a new tower was erected at a maximum of 60 feet two
years later in 1917. In November the bell, which was located in the tower, was
rang for the first time. Then in 1938 the tower was taken down again and reduced
to 48 feet, as it still remains today. The first marriage
to take place in this church was to William Howell and Elizabeth Jane Pippy on
December 15, 1880 and when they celebrated the 100 year anniversary the last was
to Barbara Hillier and Anthony Butt on December 22, 1979. But that was not the
last wedding ever in this chruch for the reason that the chruch is still
operating and you can still get married in this chruch if you wish.
