NDVI Composites - Geocomp-n   The Geocomp-n system has processed systematically 7-day composites from the NOAA-AVHRR sensor every year since 1987 from mid-April to the end of September. An NDVI channel is derived in the compositing process. The nominal spatial resolution of this database is 1.1 km, but the data is distributed using a resolution of 1 by 1 km. An advantage of this data source is that more than 20 years of data has been recorded and is available for monitoring studies.

Spatial resolution is improved at 250 m, and other improvements compared with AVHRR are in the choice of bandwidths, radiometric calibration and the compositing method. While AVHRR uses the maximum value of the period for creating the composite, MODIS NDVI relies on information from the cloud mask, atmospheric correction, view zenith angle, solar zenith angle, relative azimuth angle, geo-registration, and adjustments to nadir (details available in the MODIS Vegetation Index Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document. All of these parameters are used in order to produce the most reliable NDVI value during the composite period. Another considerable advantage of MODIS is that data is free and available upon a request system only a few days after data acquisition.

The heart of BASINS is its suite of interrelated components essential for performing watershed and water quality analysis. These components are grouped into several categories: nationally derived environmental and GIS databases (the 48 continuous states and the District of Columbia); assessment tools (TARGET, ASSESS, and DATA MINING) for evaluating water quality and point source loadings at a large or small scales; utilities including local data import and management of local water quality observation data; two watershed delineation tools; utilities for classifying elevation (DEM), landuse, soils, and water quality data; an in-stream water quality model (QUAL2E); a simplified GIS based nonpoint source annual loading model (PLOAD); two watershed loading and transport models (HSPF and SWAT); a postprocessor (GenScn) of model data and scenario generator to visualize, analyze, and compare results from HSPF and SWAT; and many mapping, graphing, and reporting formats for documentation. BASINS supports the development of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs). BASINS’ databases and assessment tools are directly integrated within an ArcView GIS environment. By using GIS, a user can fully visualize, explore, and query to bring a watershed to life. The simulation models run in a Windows environment, using data input files generated in ArcView.

Running several hydrologic models, including HEC-1, HMS, TR-20, TR-55, the Rational Method, F0601, and the National Flood Frequency Method; 5. Viewing the results of these hydrologic models; and 6. Importing and exporting Geographic Information System (GIS) data. You pop in a couple of dems and it does the rest. It does calculation of the flow directions and concentrations. Delinations are a snap. Very easy, very user friendly - not a bad price. You can export to Arc/Info or to Shape files as well as grids.

Watershed Prioritization Formula   The Watershed Prioritization Formula uses 11 digit hydrologic cataloging unit polygons intersected with other data sets i.e. land use, water quality, groundwater contamination susceptibility, population density... to report what is in each 11 digit HUC.
