THE HEARTS IN OUR HOUSE

Congenital Heart Defects

Congenital heart defect (CHD's) are the most common birth defect.
In Canada alone, over 4,500 babies are born each year with a congenital
heart defect. The largest portion of birth related infant deaths
are due to heart abnormalities. At least 35 types of heart defects
are recognized.

In order to increase public awareness of Congential Heart Defects, an
effort has been initiated by families across Canada to declare
February 14 as "A Day For Hearts ~ Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day".
Due to the great and persistant efforts of Kevin Kienlein of Vernon,
here in BC the Provincial Proclomation was declared just this
past February(2001).

Setting aside a day of remembrance and celebration of the great
medical advances which keep our loved ones alive will honor the
unseen battle that children and adults with CHD fight daily. The creation
of a day of this kind will help to lift the barrier of ignorance,
helping both the families and indiviuals who currently are affected by
Childhood Onset Heart Disease, and those whose lives may be
affected in the future.

By Sharing our experiences and providing information about
Congential Heart Defects, we hope to raise awareness about conditions
that affect thousands of babies each year in Canada. It is our sincere hope that
efforts to educate the public will result in better support and
educational services, scientific research and improved quality of care for our
children and adults.

Sara's Story About Her CHD's

What Is A VSD??

After Sara was diagnosed with her heart defects I felt
all alone and like my child was the only one in this
messed up world that had a heart condition. I got on the
net and began searching...I am not alone here, sadly, not by a long shot.
I created an email group and (not without Beth) a web
page for Sara's specific condition. It started out as Special Kids With VSD's,
but the email group has since been changed to Special CHD Kids.
With over 50 families world wide.
I have since created a new email group, a second one,
British Columbia's Special CHD Kids,
that is for Families living within British Columbia, Canada.

I have 2 web sites now to go along with the Email Groups:

Special CHD Kids.
