Update: Statistics on Homelessness
Key Homelessness Issues
Survey Results developed and
collected by the Peel Coalition for Shelter.
A community survey was administered at the Knight's Table drop-in
(Brampton) and was sent out to agencies, churches and organizations
in the Region of Peel known to provide assistance to homeless
males. Although there is no way to ensure that duplication did
not occur among clients accessing services from various agencies,
the agencies themselves were careful not to administer the survey
to the same individual more than once. Among the findings:
- 74.3% of homeless males surveyed have been living in their
current area in Peel Region between 1-5 years, reflecting the
non-transient nature of our homeless male population.
59.5% of homeless males surveyed have experienced homelessness
in the past. The length of time homeless ranged from 8 years
to a recurring off and on situation.
63.2% of homeless males surveyed reported that they do not have
any close friends or family willing or able to provide financial
or emotional support.
84.2% of homeless males surveyed suffer from current drug or
alcohol dependence, psychiatric disorders and/or medical problems.
Of these, 67.9% were not receiving any current treatment.
32.4% of homeless males surveyed named job loss as the primary
factor contributing to their current situation.
82.4% of surveyed homeless males reported that they are single.
63.9% are between the ages of 25-39 years old.
39.5% of homeless males surveyed noted that they had only achieved
grade 9-11 education. 18.4% had only completed up to and including
grade 8.
The predominant means of transportation for this population is
walking and the bus when they can afford it. When asked if the
lack of transportation was an impediment 64.5% reported that
the lack of transportation affected job search, meant lost jobs
due to lateness, and meant sickness from walking in cold weather.
When asked what they would like to lean more about, 21% of homeless
males surveyed responded that they wanted to learn about job
search skills. Another 21% wanted information about coping and
stress management. This reflects a strong desire on the part
of the homeless male population to get their lives back on track.
