Oct. 19 - 26, 2009
Oct. 19 : Drive to Cape May area via Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Late afternoon birding along the Atlantic coastline. Ov. Diamond Crest Motel, Wildwood Crest (all week). | |
Oct. 20 : Drive to Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area to
view passerine migration along the ridge and the dunes. Explore trails. Then to the
Beanery for landbird and hawk migration. In the afternoon, we will take a cruise through
the extensive bays and marshes of Backbay. There is a chance of seeing the elusive Black
Rail and Virginia, King and Clapper Rails. B/L Oct. 21 : Drive to Cape May beach and scan for shorebirds and migrants. Explore trails around marshland for waterbirds and passerines. Visit the hawk platform and spend some time enjoying the raptor migration. In the afternoon, we visit Stone Harbor where many shorebirds can be found on the mudflats along with terns, gulls, possibly Skimmers, and egrets. Rarities such as Piping and Wilson's Plovers, Marbled Godwit, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, and Long-billed Curlew are possible here. B/L |

Oct. 22, 23 : We return to Higbee Beach for passerine migration along the dunes. In the afternoon, we attend the Avalon Seawatch . Numerous scoters, cormorants, loons and other seabirds fly close by this excellent vantage point. B/L | |
Oct. 24 : Today we drive along the Atlantic seaboard checking suitable areas for ducks, geese, herons, gulls, terns, and shorebirds. If time permits, we may also visit some inland sites. B/L | |
Oct. 25: Today we visit the extensive marshes, swamps and bays of Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge as well as following some of its forested trails for passerine migrants. B/L | |
Oct. 26 : We reluctantly drive home today after breakfast.
There will be one stop for birding en route. B/L
