Game #1
Monday, September 17
Sunbury carried the momentum of their seven game series win over Enterprise
to score early and often against Moscow and their starting pitcher Greg
Garrity. Sunbury centre fielder Paul Tolles led off the home half
of the first inning with a triple down the right field line. Left
fielder Terry Orr then singled up the middle with the ball bouncing off
of Garrity to score the opening run of the series. One out later,
second baseman Darryl Barker, who made an excellent over-the-shoulder sliding
catch on the first batter of the game, singled to score Orr and give Sunbury
a 2-0 lead. Sunbury struck again in the second inning, scoring two
more runs. Third baseman Dave Walsh led off the inning with a walk
and one out later scored when right fielder Jason Norman tripled to right
field. Norman scored later in the inning when Orr hit a single to
left field. Moscow had five hits through the first three innings
off of starter Kirk Sudds, however they could not get on the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the third Sunbury scored two unearned runs when the shortstop
had a fly ball pop out of his glove. Both Barker and shortstop Corey
Fowler had been walked with one out and both had advanced on a fly ball
to right field. Walsh then hit a high fly ball to the shortstop that
dropped, allowing Sunbury to extend their lead to 6-0 after three innings.
The pitchers of both teams then dominated the next three innings, each
keeping the other team off the scoreboard. In the top of the seventh,
Moscow began a comeback that eventually ended with the winning run at the
plate. Centre fielder Chris Gaffney began the one out rally with
a deep blast to centre field to make the score 6-1. Catcher Chris
Reid then reached base when he was hit by a pitch and moved to second on
a passed ball. Designated player Andrew Plumley then singled to centre
field, scoring Reid. Second baseman Joe Reid then followed with an
RBI single. Sunbury brought in reliever Craig Hollingsworth to try
to stop the comeback and Garrity greeted him with a single to left field.
After striking out the next batter for the second out, Hollingsworth then
walked third baseman Jay Sutton to load the bases and bring the game winning
run to the plate. Hollingsworth was able to strike the next batter
out to end the game.
