Leo Molland and Gertrude McLellan are believed to have met before World War I. After returning from the war, where he served as an acting major in the tank corps, Leo returned briefly to his position working with the Railway Clearing House. Sometime after the war, Leo and Gertrude were married. Leo left his position with the railways and began working in borstals (young offenders detention centers). The family settled temprarily in the city of Rochester, in Kent, England, which is where they lived at the time of the birth of Hugh.
