This site is to help provide owner's with operational and service information pertaining to the 1990-1993 Mercedes 124 Series 300E and 300TE 4MATIC. This vehicle is considered as one of the best handling and best engineered four wheel drive cars. The 4MATIC system always starts off in all-wheel-drive mode 1(4WD) but falls back to rear-wheel-drive (2WD)mode 0 automatically when wheel slip is not sensed or when vehicle speed of 20KPH (12MPH) is reached. This 4WD design allows for the traditional feel of a rear wheel drive Mercedes at highway speed. When wheel slip is sensed, then one of three 4WD modes is activated by the computer, Mode 1 is 35%/65% front/rear axle torque split, mode 2 4WD is 50%/50%  front/rear axle torque split and mode 3 adds locking the rear differential (ASD) to mode 2. 4WD Mode 1 can also be activated during acceleration to 50kph if the brakes are applied. As long as acceleration exceeds a setpoint of0.5m/sec^2)then mode 1 is engaged over 20kph. Mode 3 cannot be engaged over 35kph. Braking always deactivates 4WD except at vehicle speeds under 2.5kph when mode 1 is engaged.
