Collars
by: enslaved heart

Collars are to the D/s lifestyle, as wedding rings are to the vanilla world. They are visual symbols of a devoted, loyal and loving heart. It is presented by a Dominant to their submissive recognizing and celebrating a committment to each other.

The style of collar varies between each couple. It can be a leather, steel or fabric choker, perhaps a gold or silver necklace, braclet or anklet and even a charm, peircing or tatoo. They can be adorned with jewels, studs or small locks. Some styles may also include a ring which a leash can be attached.

Several reasons exist to give and recieve a collar which depend on the type and the purpose.
Protection: A protective collar is given to a new and inexperienced submissive who will remain under the care and supervision of an experienced Dominant who guides and protects them while they explore relationships in the lifestyle. This type of collar prevents these submissives from rushing or feeling pressured into committing to a partner. Once the Dom feels that they sub has found a suitable match, the collar is removed.
Training: A training collar is given to a student of submission. It is offered by a Dominant who is qualified to teach and mentor the student. The length of time a sub is in training varies from 2-6 months. After the teacher feels they have taught and guided the student all they can, it is removed to allow the sub the freedom to continue their education with a more experienced Dominant or persue their search for an owner. During training Mentor may have greater expectations and be very strict causing they sub to develop more of a sense of responsibilities for behavior and learn protocol as their actions reflect back onto their teacher.
Ownership: An ownership collar is given to a submissive by their Dominant as a visual token showing that they are proudly owned. Giving and recieving such a collar is a celebration of a deep and emotional committment therefore should not be taken lightly. When such a collar is worn, a respect and understanding within the community recognizes this sub belongs to the Dom and answers only to them. And unwritten rule states that dominants do not interfer with the actions of an owned sub unless in extreme cases. Ownership collars are not to be temporary and removal/release of such are difficult and painful events.
Humilation: This type of collar is used during scenes as a tool to humilate a sub participating in puppy play and such. There is no symbolic level of relationship beyond the Dom's control and desire to play and the sub's obedience to obey. It is a tool to add realism and authority signifying the Dom's dominance and the submissive's submission.

Protocol states that a collar is owned by the Dominant and if a relationship terminates, the collar is to be returned to them. It is disrespectful to own and an insult to the lifestyle to wear the collar of a Dominant after released.
