  1.    New   "John Ransom's Andersonville Diary" *****
    History - By: John Ransom.

  2. "Transport To Disaster" *****
History - By: James W. Elliott.

An excellent book about the Sultana, the steam boat that blew up on April 27, 1865. It was carrying Union soldiers on their way home from Confederate prison camps, as well as civilians and crew members. The actual number of those who died has been contested for years, with various numbers being thrown about, but it is sufficient to say that over 1,500 people died that night on the Mississippi. I highly recommend this book!

Hardcover; 247 total pages with photographs.
    Published in: 1962.
    Publisher: Holt, Rinehart & Winston.
    Cost: $4.95 when first published.
    ISBN: None
Library of Congress Catalog Card: # 62-11159

    History - by: Dee Brown.

This is about the Confederate soldiers who were recruited from Union prison camps in the north, to serve in the west. On the condition they would not be sent south to fight their former comrades. Mine came from the U.S.Cavalry Museum Fort Riley Kansas, but I got it in St. Louis at a massive yard sale for twenty five cents!

  1.    New   "To Appomattox; Nine April Days, 1865" *****
    History - by: Burke Davis

This is an excellent read! Davis combines personal accounts from those present to weave a picture of the last 9 days up to Appomattox. Not everything is covered but still a very good accounting and worth reading.

  6. "Great Battles of the Civil War" ****
History - by: the editors of Life, Text by: Paul Mandel.

My wife picked this up at an estate sale. There is no ISBN number and I'm sure it is out of print. The front cover has a mural that winds around to the back and you fold the last page out to complete the scene. It is a painting of the cavalry battle at Brandy Station.

Paperback - 48 total pages. Text, paintings, and drawings,
    Publisher: Life
    Published in: 1961

  7. "Chancellorsville 1863. The Souls Of The Brave" *****
History - by: Ernest B. Furgurson.

The narrative about the battle on the author's part is true to form. As you read this, it is very easy to see the entire operation, he makes you live it. I highly recommend this book, a good read.

    Hardcover.- 411 pages with illustrations
    Published in: 1992
    Publisher: A Knopf Book
    Cost: $20.00,
    ISBN : 0-394-58301-9

  8. "Battle Maps Of The Civil War" *****
History - by: Richard O'Shea, Maps by: David Greenspan, Introduction by: Robert K. Krick.

Full of rich pictures, maps, aerial views from satellites and beautiful paintings by Don Troiani. The way these battle maps are put together is quite fantastic. It allows the reader the opportunity to view the battle as it occurred, it's kind of hard to explain, you really have to view them. I would not recommend this book to the "sometime" Civil War reader, because $32.95 may be a little steep for some to buy a book of maps & never look at them. I was upset that they did not cover any engagements in Missouri, but they did a good job on the battles they did cover. You can probably get this book at a reduced price by now I would think.

    Hardcover.- 176 pages with illustrations
    Published in: 1992
    Publisher: American Heritage
    Cost: $32.95,
    ISBN : 0-8317-1372-0

  9. "The History and Battlefields of the Civil War" ****
    History - by: John Bowen

I really like this one, it covers the battlefields and adds some stories, but does not cover all the engagements.

    Hardcover, 351 pages, photographs.
    Published in:
    Publisher: Wellfleet Press books,
    Cost: $30.00 or more
    ISBN : 1-55521-750-8

  10. "Chickamauga (Bloody Battle In The West)" *****
    History - by: Glenn Tucker

A great book! This one was the book that caused me to want to pursue more knowledge on this subject.

Paperback, 454 pages, some map illustrations.
    Published in: 1961, reprint; 1976
    Publisher: Morningside Publishing,
    Cost: ?
    ISBN : 0-89029-015-6

  11. "The Battle Of Belmont" *****
History - by: put out at the 132nd anniversary reenactment

A spindled book accounting the battle.

    Published in: 1993,
    Publisher: Enterprise Courier Printing,
Cost: $??? Received mine at the reenactment.
ISBN : No ISBN, you had to be there to get this book.

  12. "The Battle of Pilot Knob" *****
History - by: Edgar J. St. Clair

There is not much to this book, but it has a lot of information crammed into a small package.

    Paperback, 20 pages, pictures.
    Published in: August 1989,
Publisher: American Gold Label & Printing Co.,
    Cost: $2.00
