  1.    New   "The Man Who Killed Lincoln" *****
History - By: Philip Van Doren Stern

An excellent picture of John Wilkes Booth and the events concerning the Lincoln assassination. Philip weaves his story with some invented characters, but in the afterword, explains why and poses very interesting questions concerning the event. This is worth finding and reading!

Hardback; 408 total pages with pictures.
Published in: 1939. I'm sure there are later copies around.
Publisher: The Literary Guild Of America
Cost: I picked this book up at a bookstore in Festus for $3.00!

  2. "Washington D.C. In Lincoln's Time" *****
History - By: Noah Brooks, Edited by: Herbert Mitgang.

Noah Brooks was a reporter who was born in Maine in 1830. He first became acquainted with Lincoln around 1848, when he joined a Boston paper. He would later cover the famous debates in Illinois & eventually became good friends with Lincoln, covering his tenure at the White House. Brooks would be the President's favorite correspondent & consequently became privy to intimate discussions & events that surrounded Lincoln. This book is a good insight to the life of Lincoln during the Washington years, but has a lot of knowledgeable information on those who made up the power structure of Washington during the war years. A pretty good read.

    Softback; 309 total pages.
Published in: originally published in 1895 under the title: "Washington In Lincoln's Time". This version came out in 1958, 1962, 1971 & 1989 (which is my copy).
Publisher: The University Of Georgia Press
Cost: It is out of print, but copies are floating around for around $30.00. I found my copy at a Goodwill store for 75 cents.
    ISBN : 0-8203-1171-5.

  3. "The Lincoln Reader" *****
History - Introduction & Edited by: Paul M. Angleby.

This is a an excellent combination of Lincoln's life, told by those who knew him the best, or were present during a particular event involving Abe. I highly recommend this one, it is a very good read.

ISBN : None on my copy.

  4. "Lincoln The Unknown" *****
    History - by: Dale Carnegie.

"Lincoln The Unknown" is a very fascinating read & one that I could not put down until finished. It has many well researched & interesting bits of unknown information about Lincoln. I highly recommend this book.

Hardcover; 256 pages, Text & no illustrations.
    Published in: 1959.

  5. "The Death Of Lincoln (A Picture History Of The Assassination)" ****
    History - by: Leroy Hayman.

Softcover; 128 pages, Text & pictures.
    Published in: 1968, mine is a 1972.
    Publisher: Scholastic Books.
Cost: The price listed on the cover is 60 cents, but it is probably more today (if it can be found in print).

  8. "Mr. Lincoln's Camera Man, Mathew B. Brady" ****
    History - by: Roy Meredith

This book has many pictures attributed to Brady, that he did not take, but when it came out, historians had not realized that was the case. It is a good source for pictures, just do not believe everything in this one.

Reference Books To Famous Leaders and People of the Civil War.

**********************       **********************

  1.    New   "Jeb Stuart The Last Cavalier" *****
    History - by: Burke Davis.

Davis has a way of writing that is enjoyable in presenting the material. Some incidents were questionable, but he states them as such and presents some differing perspectives from both sides of the conflict. I enjoyed this book more as I read it and highly recommend it if you are interested in Jeb..

Hardcover;462 total pages with maps and photos.

    ISBN: 0-517-18597-0

  2. "Grant Takes Command" *****
    History - by: Bruce Catton.

A good account of Grant's taking command of the Army of the Potomac. Catton writes as if he is leisurely speaking to a friend, instead of lecturing, which makes this one an enjoyable read.

    Published in: 1969.
Publisher: Little, Brown & Company (Inc.)
    Cost: Running about $10.00.

  3. "Sam Hildebrand Rides Again" *****
History - by: Henry C. Thompson.

    ISBN: None illustrated.

  4. "Statesmen of the Lost Cause ( Jefferson Davis and his cabinet )" *****
History - by: Burton J. Hendrick

This is a fascinating book Although some of the material is dated by the knowledge at the time it was published, it still is a pretty good look at the men involved in running the Confederate states. Some information is excluded, but Hendrick makes up for it with what he does include.

Hardcover; 452 total pages with illustrations.
    Published in: 1939
Publisher: The Literary Guild of America Inc.
Cost: I found this gem in a Salvation Army store in Branson for fifty cents! I'm sure it is out of print, but I hear it runs about $30.00, if you can find it.
ISBN: There is no ISBN number, or any numbers at all located in it

  5. "The Personal Memoirs of P. H. Sheridan" *****
History - new introduction by: Jeffry D. Wert

A good insight into Sheridan's life. The author describes it all very methodically, almost from a third person perspective. He omits personal instances & sticks to every mainline event he was a part of. You get the feeling that he leaves out many instances of his life that he does not want to share publicly. It was a hard read, sometimes making one reread a certain passage. I had to put it down and come back, doing this a few times. If you are a Civil War enthusiast, you will like this one.

Softcover; 535 pages with some illustrated pictures.
Published in: First published in 1888 in two volumes, mine is 1992
Publisher: mine is by Da Capo press
    Cost: $15.95
    ISBN: 0-306-80487-5

  6. "World Leaders Past and Present - Robert E. Lee" *****
    History - by: Warren Brown.

Essay on leadership by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. This is a good introductory book to the Great General. It is written for young adults, but "old" adults will enjoy this one.

Hardcover; 111 pages. photographs and text.
    Published in: 1992
Publisher: Mine came from a Kentucky State Park
    Cost: $9.95.
    ISBN : 1-55546-814-4

  7. "Damned Yankee, The Life Of General Nathaniel Lyon" *****
    History - by: Christopher Phillips.

This is "The" book written about General Lyon, without a doubt. I picked it up at the Missouri's First State Capitol site, maintained by the State. (St. Charles) I saw it there and passed on it, thinking I could get it elsewhere, well, a year or so went by and I never saw it anywhere else, so I picked it up the next time I visited. A good Read!

    Hardcover.- 287 pages rare pictures.
    Published in: 1990
    Publisher: University Of Missouri Press
    Cost: over $10.00.
    ISBN : 0-8262-0731-6

  8. "Lost Victories. The Military Genius of Stonewall Jackson" *****
    History - by: Bevin Alexander.

A very well researched account of General Jackson, at times it drags, but interesting. I picked this up at a place called Bookland by Lake St. Louis.

Hardcover.- 350 pages - a couple of map illustrations.
    Published in: 1992
    Publisher: Henry Holt Books.
    Cost: $30.00, discount for $10.98.
    ISBN : 0-8050-1830-1

  9. "Three Years With Quantrill" *****
History - by: John McCorkle, written by: O.S. Barton. Notes By: Albert Castel. Commentary by: Herman Hattaway.

The book is about John McCorkle, a scout for Quantrill, who tells his story. I can't remember what I paid for this, but I think I got it at General Sweeny's Museum of Civil War - http://www.civilwarmuseum.com/. This is a great place! If you have never been, make the trip! If you stop at the Missouri visitor's center in Springfield, you can probably get discount tickets. I stopped there and they gave me some, but admission is extremely low, too low in my opinion.

Hardcover, 232 pages, with pictures and text accounting them.
    Published in: 1914, reprinted: my copy is from 1992 {probably many more}
    Publisher: Oklahoma Press
    Cost:
    ISBN : 0-8061-2451-2
