Reference Books To Diaries, Letters, Questions and Views

**********************       **********************

  1.    New   The Amazing Civil War" ***
    History - by Webb Garrison.

Garrison has a tendency to write books that have snippets of information covering a vast array of topics. This is one of those books. It is an interesting read, but the editing or publisher, left in some erroneous information.

Softcover; 285 total pages with photos & illustrations.
    Published in: 1988.
    Published by: Rutledge Hill Press
Cost: Picked mine up in Silver Dollar City for $12.95.
    ISBN: 1-55853-585-3

  2. "Civil War Diary (1862 - 1865) of Bishop William Henry Elder" *****
    History - by Milton Meltzer.

Most people would think this would cover many topics, but Elder was frugal in his descriptions of events, but recorded many names of every day people who were there in Mississippi during this time.

This is a good book in the respects of a collector of the material, for most describes his daily routine associated with the church. I say this because, Elder was brought into prominence by his refusal to obey the order of the Federal troops at Natchez, to have certain prayers for the President of the United States recited publicly in the churches of his diocese. He was arrested, tried, and convicted; but the decision of the military court was reversed at Washington. If one did not know this before reading the diary, you would never think he was in such deep trouble, for he downplays the events in the script.

Softcover; 125 total pages with some of the diary missing (or never written, no one knows for sure).
Published in: There is no date as to when this came out, but Gerow was Bishop of Natchez in 1924. The name changed to Natchez-Jackson in 1956 and Gerow retired in 1967, so it came out between 1956 & 1967.
Published by: Most Reverend R. O. Gerow, Bishop of Natchez-Jackson.
Cost: Thanks to Pat Johnson for selling me this book for $10.00 plus shipping.
ISBN: There are no reference numbers in the book, but finding a copy, I would think, might be a chore. The original diary was in Woodstock College, in Maryland, but Woodstock College closed in 1974 and the library was moved to Georgetown University, Washington, DC.

  3. "Voices From The Civil War" *****
    History - by Milton Meltzer.

A few misstated events does not detract from this book! A good and quick read. One will find here, a few accounts that blend in well with a fast summation of the war. Mr. Meltzer writes well. This is one Civil War book that you will not put down until finished.

Softcover; 203 total pages with many pictures & illustrations.
    Published in: 1992.
    Publisher: Harper Trophy
Cost: $6.95. I picked mine up in Branson an old town, for $1.79 at a book store there.
    ISBN: 0-663-58571-6

  4. "The Civil War" ***
History - by Geoffrey C. Ward, Ric Burns & Ken Burns.

This is not a bad compilation piece. Be warned though, the author states certain incidents as facts that are still being debated today. Still, it has some wonderful photos & information. The end of the book I felt, was too rushed. The authors took their time to detail the main ideas in each piece presented except Lincoln's assassination and Booth's killing which came right at the end. Kind of strange, but then again, perhaps it is just my interpretation.

Hardcover; 425 total pages with many pictures & illustrations.
    Published in: 1990.
    Publisher: Knopf
Cost: This runs around $60.00 in the U.S. $75.00 in Canada. It is the companion book with the PBS series that ran back then. Received mine as a gift.
    ISBN: 0-394-56285-2

  5. "An Epitaph For Dixie" ***
    History/Commentary, - by Harry S. Ashmore.

Ashmore has written a few books on the Black race and its position in society (which is strange, because he is a white guy!). I say that, because this book is about the "Negros" place in society in 1958, looking back from the Civil War until the time the book was written, in the South. The material is dated, but some of his conclusions are worth looking at, others would be perceived as racist by some standards today. Different perspectives get drawn by the text, I have seen people who agree with his views, while others are offended. I guess you will have to read it to see what I mean.

Hardcover; 190 total pages of text
    Published in: 1958.
Publisher: W. W. Norton Company Inc.
Cost: $3.50 when new, but ranges up to $20.00 now. I found this for a $1.00.
ISBN: None given, but the Library of Congress Catalog Card Number is 58-5150

  6. "To Be A Slave" *****
History - by Julius Lester. Illustrated by Tom Feelings.

A very well written collection of first hand accounts from individuals who were slaves. This book will leave one wanting to see more material on the subject. I highly recommend this book!

    Softcover; 160 total pages.
    Published in: 1968.
    Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Cost: It runs around $4.50. I picked mine up at The Ulysses S. Grant Gift Shop.
    ISBN: 0-590-42460-2

  7. "A Diary From Dixie" *****
History - by Mary Boykin Chesnut. Edited by Ben Ames Williams, with a foreward by Edmund Wilson.

This edition includes material that was left out in earlier versions of the diary. You will find yourself going through different emotional feelings towards Mary from front to back. A great historical account of the time.

Softcover; 572 total pages with one portrait of Mary.
Published in: 1949; this one is from 1980
    Publisher: Harvard University Press.
    Cost: It runs around $14.95.
    ISBN: 0-674-20291-0

  8. "Half Slave and Half Free. The Roots Of Civil War" ***
Historical Interpretation - by: Bruce Levine

This book is a slow read, I found myself putting it down & coming back later. It leaves some material out and only presents information to the reader, that the author wants to be seen. It is presented as an intellectual study of the causes of the war, but I felt it lacked the passion to captivate the reader.

Hardcover; 292 total pages, but only 242 pages are the subject matter, the rest is reference material data. Text & no pictures.
    Published in: 1992
    Publisher: Hill & Wang
Cost: I received mine as a gift, but it runs between $6.00 & $10.00, depending on where you purchase it.
    ISBN: 0-8090-5352-7

  9. "Conceived In Liberty. Joshua Chamberlain, William Oates, And The American Civil War" *****
    History - by: Mark Perry

This book was written to show the lives of the two men who faced each other at Gettysburg, but Mark weaves a huge web by including other amounts of information. At times, it seems like he is drifting off of the subject matter, only to bring it all back in. In other words The book appears to be unbiased and is definitely well researched . "Conceived In Liberty...", may not appeal to all readers, but I thought the entire subject matter was written well enough to keep me interested. I also read it in a short amount of time.

    Hardcover; 500 pages with pictures.
    Published in: 1997
    Publisher: Viking books {Penguin-Putnam Inc.}
    Cost: $31.95
    ISBN: 0-670-86225-8

  10. "The Confederate Reader, How The South Saw The War" *****
History - Edited by: Richard B. Harwell

Has a catalog in the back of other books by Dover.

    Softcover; 389 pages with illustrations.
Published in: First published in 1957, mine is from 1989.
    Publisher: Dover Books
    Cost: $8.95.
    ISBN: 0-486-25980-3

  11. "For Cause and Comrades" *****
History - by: James M. McPherson.

This book asks the question, why did they fight? The author uses numerous letters from the soldiers to postulate reasons behind their actions and thinking. A very good read.

Hardcover; 237 pages, text and pictures on the front and back inside covers.
    Published in: 1997.
    Publisher: Oxford Books,
Cost: It was a gift. I have seen it in a used book store for under $10.00.
    ISBN : 0-19-509023-3

  12. "The Bloody Struggle - The Civil War In The East, 1862" *****
History - Edited by: Albert A. Nofi.

This is the second volume of a series called, "Eyewitness History Of The Civil War". I do not have the first volume or any after. I'm not sure how many books are in this series.

    Hardcover; 176 pages with illustrations.
    Published in: 1988.
    Publisher: Gallery Books.
Cost: $7.98, but I got mine on sale for $4.98 at Lake St. Louis.
    ISBN: 0-8317-3082-X

  13. "The Story The Soldiers Wouldn't Tell {Sex in the Civil War}" *****
    History - by: Thomas P. Lowry M.D.

This book deals with subjects that have been neglected since the war was fought. After reading this, you will gain a much greater understanding of the war and camp life. I highly recommend it.

    Hardcover - 209 pages
    Publisher: Stackpole
    Published in: 1994
    Cost: around $10.00,
    ISBN : 0-8117-1515-9

  14. "For Country, Cause and Leader " *****
History - by: Charles B. Hayden, Edited by: Stephen W. Sears.

This is the diary of Charles Hayden, who was a 27 year old lawyer when he joined the 2nd Michigan. He rose from a Sergeant to a Lieutenant Colonel. Charles Hayden's journal is an excellent picture of the trials and tribulations the soldiers faced. When you read this, you'll understand just how terrible the conditions were, these men bravely faced. I will not say here, how the journal ends, or what happens to him, because it would spoil the experience of the read. I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it.

Hardcover, 371 pages. Text and one picture of Charles Hayden.
Published in: First published in 1993.
    Publisher: Ticknor & Fields,
    Cost: $25.00
    ISBN: 0-395-66360-1

  15. "Infantryman Pettit {The Civil War letters of Corporal Frederick Pettit}" *****
History - Edited by: William Gilfillan Gavin.

Corporal Pettit was a soldier with Pennsylvania's famous "Roundheads" (the100th Veteran Volunteers) It is an excellent book! I think I got this one at a bookshop in St. Charles old town.

Paperback - 196 pages with photos,
    Publisher: Avon,
    Published in: 1990,
    Cost: around $10.00,
    ISBN : 0-380-71437-X

  16. "Witness To War, The Civil War 1861-1865" ***
Military Reference - by: Harold Holzer.

Personal letters, documents, speeches and recollections never before published accounts. This is a fairly good reference book, but he tries to cram too much information into too small a volume. The result is a readers digest version of the events covered. You are left wondering where the rest of the body of the letters etc. are. He seems to have access to enough material, that he could have written at length on certain subjects. Great material for quotes.

    Paperback.- 208 pages
    Published in: 1996
    Publisher: Perigee Books
    Cost: around $12.50,
    ISBN : 0-399-52203-4

  17. "Across Five Aprils" *****
    Novel - by: Irene Hunt.

This is the story of Jethro Creighton, who grows up in Southern Illinois during the Civil War. Most Civil War fiction is just that, fiction but the author based this fiction on her grandfather's memories and info. It is a very real description of life during this time. She nailed this one, worth having. I don't recommend much fiction when it comes to the Civil War, it has to be very good.

    Paperback.- 190 pages
    Published in: 1965, reprint; 1986.
    Cost: around $5.00,
    ISBN : 0-425-10241-6

  18. "The Civil War Years. A Day by Day Chronical" ****
History - by: Robert E. Denney

This one puts out a lot of information, worth reading.

    Paperback, 607 pages,
    Published in: 1992, reprinted 1994,
    Publisher: Sterling books,
    Cost: $17.95
    ISBN : 0-8069-8515-1

Reference Books To Tales, Legends and Trivia Facts of the Civil War

**********************       **********************

  1.    New   "The Red Badge Of Courage" *****
Historical Fiction - by: Stephen Crane.

Some find that the story drags at times, but when this came out, there were still many Civil War vets still alive & they basically praised the book, because they were able to relate to Henry. It stirred some controversy, as it portrayed the lead character as a coward at first, but this caused more people to read it I'm sure. Crane died at an early age & this has always been remembered as his masterpiece. This was the same edition I read as a boy.

The entire story is located on-line as well, in case you do not want to buy the book, but still have an interest in reading it. It is located here:
    http://guweb2.gonzaga.edu/faculty/campbell/crane/red.htm

    Softcover: 223 total pages.
Published in: 1967 - frist published in 1895
    Publisher: Lancer Books,
Cost: I'm sure there are other editions floating around. I picked mine up at a Goodwill store for a dime.
ISBN: My copy has no ISBN number, but has the Magnum reference of 13-402.

  2. "Damn The Torpedoes: Naval Incidents Of The Civil War" *****
    History - by: A. A. Hoehling.

This is a very good book on engagements concerning the Navy of the period. If you are interested in the subject matter, this is a good beginners piece, because you will finish wanting more from the author, who blends fact in with personal observations that read well.

Softcover: 207 total pages with photos and drawings.
    Published in: 1998.
    Publisher: Gramercy Books,
Cost: First published, this book ran $19.95, but I picked mine up in Branson (At the $5.00 book store) for $4.99. A real bargain.
    ISBN: 0-517-18979-8.

  3. "More Civil War Curiosites" ****
    History - by: Webb Garrison.

This book continues his theme of presenting odd bits of information, but these books have a tendency to repeat earlier accounts written by the author. Still it was not a bad read and raises some questions.

Softcover: 256 total pages with photos.
    Published in: 1995.
    Publisher Rutledge Hill Press,
Cost: I picked mine up at Silver Dollar City, for $12.99.
    ISBN: 1-55853-366-6.

  4. "If The South Had Won The Civil War" ***
What if? - Fiction. - by: Mac Kinlay Kantor.

An article based on this story was published in Look Magazine November 22, 1960. The author speculates what would have happened, mixing actual historic events in with the storyline if the South had won. For example: Grant dies in this story when he falls from his horse and strikes his head. He actually had a nasty fall from a horse and was laid up for awhile, but using the event in the story was rather clever.

It was an interesting story, however the author crams too many event timelines into the book and not enough detailed description. I think it would have been a nice novel if expanded to run over 700 pages at least. A lot of page space was wasted by crude drawings.

Softcover: 118 total pages including crude drawings as illustrations.
    Published in: 1961.
    Publisher: Bantam Books,
Cost: Searching the web, I found a price for a re-issue, it is running around $9.00.
    ISBN: 0-3128-6949-5.

  5. "Phantom Army of the Civil War & Other Southern Ghost Stories" *
Ghost Stories - Fiction. - Compiled & edited by: Frank Spaeth (from the files of Fate magazine)

Do not be confused by the title, there is not much associated with the Civil War in this book. I would have given it a higher rate if I was doing it for ghost stories only, but it falls short for a Civil War fix.

    Softcover; 238 total pages,
    Published in: 1997.
    Publisher: Castle books,
Cost: Runs $7.99 but a friend picked this up for me at Wal-Mart for $5.97.
    ISBN: 0-7858-1287-3.

  6. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" *****
History Fiction. - by: Harriet Beecher Stowe

If you are going to study the Civil War, this book is a must, because you can read about the stir this book caused, but until you read it, you have no idea why. After you read it, you will understand why Lincoln greeted Harriet at the White House with these words, "The little woman who wrote the book that made this great war".

    Softcover; 446 total pages,
Published in: First published in 1851-52, this one is from 1981.
    Publisher: Bantam Books,
Cost: Running around $5.00. I picked mine up at the now closed Branson Civil War Museum.
    ISBN : 0-553-21218-4.

  7. "Civil War Stories" *****
History Fiction. - by: Ambrose Bierce.

The book includes 16 stories taken from the 1909 editions of vol. I and II of "The Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce". Still, it is an excellent read and the price is well worth the purchase.

    Softcover; 124 total pages,
    Published in: 1994.
    Publisher: Dover,
Cost: I picked this up today at the Ulysses S. Grant Gift Shop for $1.50 and did not realize that I had these stories and more, in a better collection entitled Ambrose Bierce's Civil War.
    ISBN : 0-486-28038-1

  8. "A Treasury Of Civil War Tales" *****
    History - by: Webb Garrison

    Cost: $5.00
    ISBN : 0-345-36262-4

  9. "Facts America: The Civil War" ****
    History - by: Eric Weiner

There is not much new found in the text, but the photos are excellent. Some, I've never seen before. I would like to say that I do have these same photos in other better books.( so many, sometimes I get them mixed up) This one above would be a good starter book for a young person, who was wanting info on the Civil War.

Hardcover, 64 pages, Lots of photos & Illustrations.

  10. "Civil War Curiosities" ***
    History - by: Web Garrison.

Strange stories, oddities, events and . There is a sequel to this one out, but I do not have it yet. It is not a bad read, just jumpy.

  14. "The Civil War Society's Encyclopedia of the Civil War" ***
History - by: The Civil War Society.

I was disappointed with this one. They left out so much, especially anything from Missouri. For instance, they explained what a scalawag was, but omitted Sterling Price! It is a huge volume & has some really good photos, that's why it got three stars.

    Hardcover, 420 pages, with pictures.

  17. "The Civil War. Strange & Fascinating Facts" *****
    History - by: Burke Davis

This is one of those books you read for fun. It is a good one to start off with, because it does not weigh you down like a military technical book would, but it has some good material. I picked this one up at Silver Dollar City.

    Hardcover, 250 pages with illustrations
    Published in: 1960, reprinted 1982,
    Publisher: Wings books
    Cost: $9.99.
    ISBN : 0-517-37151-0

  18. "The Killer Angels" ****
Historical Novel - by: Michael Shaara

This one is still argued about and discussed, but is a great read.

Paperback, 360 pages, some battle map illustrations.
    Published in: 1974, reprint; 1980
    Publisher: Ballantine Books,
    Cost: $2.50
    ISBN : 0-345-28605-7

  19. "1001 Civil War Trivia" ***
    Trivia - by: Charles B. O'Brien

Trivia nuts and Civil War buffs will like it, but not much for any in depth study.

    Paperback, 64 pages, with illustrations.
    Published in: 1991,
    Publisher: Heritage Books,
    Cost: $7.50
    ISBN : 1-55613-424-X
