Surge was born in 1994 to Sharky. He is Sharky's second and last calf. We also know who his father is. Kitlope (R12) is his father.
He was born into a small family consisting of Sharky, and his older sister Nodales. He is the only member of the matriline who never met his grandmother Saddle, or his uncle A15.
Surge was orphaned at a very young age. When he was only 3 years old, his mother died, leaving him and 11-year-old Nodales behind.
Nodales became very motherly and took care of Surge, and raised him. The little orca was very lucky to have such a close sister.
In 2002, when Surge was 8 years old, and Nodales was 16, Springer, another orphan, traveled with them for a while. Nodales took care of her, and Surge helped.
Springer has moved on to her (hopefully permanent) new family now, and it's just Nodales and Surge again. Surge is rather hard to identify, but since he's now 11 years old (almost 12!) he should begin to spout soon, making him a lot more noticeable.
