      Did you know that:

The Kilt is the national dress of Scotland. It originated in the Highlands and was considered to be vulgar by Lowlanders and the English. In fact, the English outlawed the wearing of Tartan after the battle at Culloden (16 April 1746) and punishment was imprisonment or banishment to the Colonies. The Ban lasted for 36 years.

H&H Scottish Imports will assist you in putting together your Highland dress. Your best source for scottish highland kilts, clothing, clan crest badge, kilt pins, brooches, accessories, bonnets, tams, ballcaps, sporrans, weapons and celtic jewelry.

~ Through the use of modern technology Angus Macleod has created a CD that describes the clearance of 109 families from the Island of Lewis and their migration to Canada ~ 1851 ~
      logo

A Legacy of the Highland Clearances

letter the Silent Ones is the fulfillment of a life long dream for composer Angus Macleod. Over three years in the making, The Silent Ones has taken Macleod on a personal odyssey of self discovery to Scotland's Isle of Lewis, the Eastern Townships of Quebec and finally to the main location of the story, Huron Township, Ontario.

The CD unfolds a true tale of tragedy and triumph chronicling the migration of 109 families from the Island of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides to the remote backwoods of nineteenth century Upper Canada. Victims of a kind of nineteenth century ethnic cleansing known as the Highland Clearances, the Lewis emigrants were evicted from their Hebridean crofts in 1851 by landowner James Matheson. The crofters were then transported overseas where they settled together in a block of farms in Bruce County, Ontario; maintaining their language and culture well into the twentieth century. The group has become known as the Lewis Settlers.

You can visit Angus McLeads' WebSite at http://www.torquil.net/ to read more about this time in Scottish and Canadian history. View the table of contents and you will see audio links and how you can obtain the CD, "The Silent Ones". The audio links will lead you through the conflict created by the Clearances and how Angus has adapted modern technology to make this episode a living reality in his CD.
