~ The Clan MacLennan's ~
Ancient History

While I Breathe I Hope

Clan MacLennan and Antiquity armor.gif

In order to better understand a great part of the Scottish Culture, you have to go back in time to learn how the Clan System functioned. Thanks to; the Clan McIvor's historical account of the clan system found in the, "Scots in New Scotland (Nova Scotia)" Website; we can see why the Highlanders were to set their course in history.

The history of the clan is ancient and rich in tradition; going well back into the 1200's. The following historical references come from the book titled; "The Clans and Tartans of Scotland", written by Robert Bain.

The Clan MacLennan belonged to two distinct families;the Logans of the Lowlands and the MacLennans from the Highlands.

This one point, between the two families, was to become an issue of contention in modern times. As explained by Bain; the MacLennans became a distinct entity when; "In the 15th century a feud between the Logans and the Frasers . . . in which Gilligorm, the chief of the Logans, was killed and his widow carried off by the victors"(pg. 138). It is at this point in history that there seems to be no argument about the MacLennans being separate from the Logans as a child was born from the widow.

Bain tells the reader that this child was the, ". . .posthumous son of Gilligorm"(pg. 138). Thus, we are led to believe the child was the legitimate heir to the head/chief of the Clan. The child, who was deformed at birth and raised by the monks at Beauly, was named, Crotair MacGilligorm - Crotair; the son of Gilligorm. At the time of manhood, Crotair, ". . . took Holy Orders at Kilmour in Sleat and in Kilchrinin, Glenelg"(pg. 138). Crotair had children (like most clergy of the time) and these descendants came to be known as Siol Fhinnein or MacLennans. So the story begins!

The following site is a must! THE BLINKING BLUE WILL NAVIGATE Y0U TO A SUPER PREHISTORY SITE with a great discussion on the ancient history of the Clan MacLennan.

Defend and Protect

Eilean Donan Castle and the Clan MacLennan

In discussing this famous Castle, I refer to the following excerpts selected from - "Detailed History of Eilean Donan Castle"; written by Joanne Mackenzie-Winter.

The name Eilean Donan is Gaelic for Island of Donan, a 7th century saint who is thought to have lived here as a religious hermit.

During the 14th century, Eilean Donan was the subject of a dispute between the Mackenzies and the Earldom of Ross. The Earldom laid claim to the castle and threatened to back the claim with force. However a charter of David II in 1362 confirmed the Mackenzies' possession. By this time, MacLennans and MacRaes had settled in the district, the latter quickly rising to the position of defenders and protectors of the Mackenzies and known as their 'Coat of Mail'.

For further insight into this amazing castle and its heritage please visit, "The Internet Guide to Scotland"Joanne Mackenzie-Winter's Detailed History of Eilean Donan Castle

While your there, go with Joanne on a pictorial; Internet Guided Tour of Eilean Donan Castle - Many of Joanne's pictures bring to light those scenes shot for the film, "Highlander".

"The History of the Clan McRae"

It is said that Eilean Donan Castle was garrisoned by Macraes and Maclennans during the latter part of the thirteenth century, when it was first taken possession of by Kenneth, the founder of the House of Kintail.

  • Origin Of The McLendon-McCLendon Family:

The Myth and The Reality" An interesting reading to say the least.

  • "The History of the Clan McRae and Clan Mackenzie"

The following is a representation of the document known as the Dornie Manuscript, the history of the Clan Mackenzie transcribed by Colin Mackenzie of Newburnside in 1760. We do not have a verified copy of the manuscript, and can not confirm this as an accurate representation, or only a subset thereof. The document does maintain interest however, in that it contains references consistent with the History of Clan Macrae by Rev. Alexander Macrae B.A. (1899), and the oral tradition of Clan Macrae. Reading through this transcript, the Clan MacLennan is mentioned several times including disputes with the MacRaes and the MacLennans of Kintail as to who should have charge of Island Donan Castle {1537}.

  • "The History of the Clan MccRaw"

In the paragraph titled FROM CLUNES TO KINTAIL the author mentions the Clan Mackenzies, Maclennans and MacRaths formed a close relationship for at least 5 centuries before the Clearances of the 18th century. The Clan MacLennan were the Standard Bearers for the MacKenzies.
